At the right time of the year, Policeman's waterhole SE of Tennant Creek in the NT is great. 8 formed camping areas, 2 long drops and enough water to kayak on.
Cheers

I had enquired about this place on Exploroz.com website for our upcoming trip and people had been saying it was a nice spot to stop.....but unfortunately I don't think we will have the time...... I'll have to put it on the bucket list for next time
The Devonport Ranges NP is one of the younger Parks in the NT isn't it ??
Policemans waterhole is simply excellent.....We drove there from the Barkley Homestead, it was my first adventure into REAL bulldust. Seriously everyone thinks they have driven through it but until you drive into stuff thats 18-24 inches deep and 50m wide that is like talcum powder...Had a "white out" inside the car..
Anyway I digress, I cant speak highly enough of the place, the Donkeys are a pain in the ass, kept us awake all night. The drive from the Stuart Highway is great, one of the great little trips we've done...its not so far when you live in Alice....

We did it 2 years ago I think. We called the lady at the Epenara homestead, she owns it. We only called her to get road conditions and then the conversation went to "you need to get my approval"... I thought it was a gazetted road however I had to eat humble pie and ask permission which she granted. It was about 3pm and she suggested to leave the following morning due to conditions and I am simply so glad we did. They use that road to take cattle to QLD, I would never ever travel on it straight after the cattle season as it is just a sea of bulldust. We tried to get around it in some spots but as mentioned, one time the edge of the track collapsed and the Prado got catapulted into the dust and we had a white out in the car.....I've been trying to get it out for 2 years :-)
Though in saying that we spotted the odd Falcon or 2 out there, how they got them out there beats me but they were out there :-)
I would suggest coming from near the Devils Marbles through the Davenport Rangers, its an awesome drive. We came back via Ali Curang/Sandover highway. Geeze it was a corrugated crappy road, well this was before the new suspension, the original toyota suspension didn't like it.
If ur interested in any more details please ask....It is a great spot, take a lilo, great if there is water in it. The ranger did an awesome job of keeping the place clean. In 2 days we only saw one group of folks, a family of indigenous pulled up and had a "wash" in the waterhole and then took off. The old police station is a pile of rocks but worth hunting down. The Donkeys, they were a pain, we had to put the swag between the car and a tree to make sure we didn't get trampled.
We have been there a couple of times, as mentioned a great place to visit. Can't recommend highly enough you go via the Frew River Loop. it is south of the waterhole so depending on your direction either way is great. Would class it as one of the most scenic drives we have done. Last time we towed a Trakmaster Gibson van, was a bit challenging but dooable.

So, if we were coming from Alice Springs, what's the best way to get in there for a bit of a look? The missus wants to call into the Devil Marbles, so I was thinking of taking the T/O to the Nth of there ??
When u guys talk of a loop, where abouts does the loop start and where is the entry/exit points? The thought was that we "may" be able to continue there across to the Barkly Hwy and as it's been previously mentioned, I need to make contact with the Station Owners.... Does anyone know or have their phone number and is it OK to cut through from west to east onto the Barkly Hwy that way? Any locked Gates?
The turn off to the Frew River Loop is 44Km nth of Barrow Ck, you turn right to Murray Downs then keep going towards Hatches Ck. You will come across an abandoned Wolfram mine (raw material for tungsten) the turn off is just past there on the left. Not all maps show it but it is on the Hema North East Deserts Map, it brings you out at the water hole. If you intend to go to the Devils Marbles Policemans Water Hole Northern access is just past there so you would have to backtrack if you wanted to do the frew Loop. Not been out to the Barkley from there so best bet would be to call the homestead, sorry can't help you on that one..

Just done the Binns Track, Hatches Creek, Policemans Waterhole and Frew Track. Awesome views and countryside. Had the waterhole to ourselves for 2 days and spent 4 nights there. Even managed to pick up some little nuggets along the way. Only downer was the stupid foreign tourists in their rented 4WD campers who drive up the middle of the track at full speed towards you and won't keep to the left.

Bugger Bali, get out and see Australia before we sell it all to China.
What's the tracks like ??
Roughly how long do u reckon it took u to complete the tracks? Our time frame might or might not allow us to head in there, but I'd really like to visit it after seeing some pics
