  • What is Bribie like to camp at?

It is pretty ironic really, I live north brissy and have done moreton, fraser, straddy, inskip etc but never Bribie which is my closest beach camping destination!!!

I have seen some stuff in 4wd action and it looks pretty amazing... Just curious as to who's been, what they recommend and think of it etc. I know the wheeling isn't going to be anything intense but it could be a great getaway just for those 1-2 night quick weekenders...

    Any feedback appreciated.

    Cheers!

    Hi Mate

Unfortunately no fires on the beach front camping - there is some scope for fires at Poverty Point.
The camping at Poverty Point looks like it would be very 'insecty' - however I have no firsthand experience of camping there.

Likewise I haven't camped at poverty point but I have camped a few times at Mission Point which is only a few ks paddle away. There are a few midges and mosquitos around sunset and sunrise but the rest of the time no big deal. Take repellent (I use the one that comes in a 1140mL bottle with a bear on it) and something to spray on as well. Mission Pt is boat access only but I think the two are fairly similar. I quite like doing the kayak thing from Redcliffe and staying overnight or two nights at Mission and then paddling up to Caloundra.

A mate of mine has been trying to get to Poverty Pt for most of this year, everytime he books it rains too much and the park gets closed.

As you can see the view is spectacular!

Fire rings have now been installed at the Ocean Beach camping grounds which will make camping there much more appealing. Completed on 4 December!

Close and convenient as you mentioned. Midges & Mosquitos are a little thick so make sure you pack some repellant. Weekly beach permit is nearing $40 and I know it's not much but it is more expensive than some of our other beaches. Yearly is around $140. Beach is pretty reasonable. Easier if you work with the tides. Some good spots to catch a feed too if your into your fishing. I'd say get up there and check it out for a day trip and see what you think. Enjoy

Been there a couple of times.

I like the way the campsites are managed. Designated and clearly marked campsites that you can book and are well separated. Not like Cooloola/Teewah beach which is further away and can be very crowded.

I like knowing that I will get a site and because sites are limited the beach never feels too crowded. If you get a site either side of "P" campsite its an easy walk to the toilet and shower block. There are also toilets and showers at the northern cutting. I found that there were less horse flies, mozzies and sandflies than the other beaches I've camped at.

Some campsites are elevated and have views of the beach. Others are set behind the dunes and are protected from the wind. We stayed in site H which was good. Last month we were at site O with some friends and booked out both sites so we had the whole area to ourselves. It was particularly windy that weekend but we were well protected with plenty of shade. Easy 2 min walk to freshwater outdoor showers which were fantastic after an early morning swim in the surf.

If you can, go for a day trip and check out the sites. Our picks are O and Q. Want to get Q next time as it has ocean views. My only gripe was no fires but looks like that has changed. Close to Brisbane, good facilities, bookable campsites and now fires too. What more do you want.

                  Are fires now allowed??

Awesome. Now silly question maybe last time i camped up there the sites were numbered. Have they changed? I camped on the surf side too.

Overall i rated it a very pleasurable trip. $40 for the permit and camping fees were minimal. I don't have an outdoor toilet but i do have a full shower set up so makes life sooo much easier!

Regarding ocean beach camping on bribie Isand. If you have any questions or if you need a beach or camping permit, a good source of advice is Nigel at Gateway Bait and Tackle at Ningi. The shop is lcoated in the small mainland township before you arrive at the Bribie island Bridge. Nigel is an agent for selling permits etc, and can also give advice regarding beach and track conditions etc.

Well gentlemen with all that it has to become my ne t destination! Especially since they now have the fire pits! Camping is not quite the same without a fire at night.

                          Thanks for all the insite.

What is Bribie like to camp at?

I camped a couple of years ago on ocean beach.
There were a whole bunch of camp sites you could book, some are on their own others all in bunches together. We stayed in one on the back on the first dune. Seconds walk from he beach, private great spot. Mossies were bloody awful at the time in mid January. But apart from that great spot. Generators weren't allowed
