I have done the lower half heaps, nothing up high lately.

    Check out:
Farina campground (40-50 kms from MAREE (Edited!) : ADL side) Good campground and excellent old township, worth the stop and maybe an overnighter?

Maree (edited) Pub, and township. Ghan trains, and mail truck.

Bopechee siding Between Maree (edited) and Borefield Road (To Roxby) there is an interesting sculpture park there. worth a look and pics. (and a cache ).

Thats all I know of as I usually come up Borefield Road from Roxby and down to Maree (edited) or across to the Strez/ Birdsville.

Last trip I did it was like a Dirt Highway, easy and safe at 120 kmh! Smooooooth as

Lake Eyre turnoff is a bit higher thats also worth the trip.

When are you going? Little ones going? I am thinking of doing a few days up that way this year but have to fit it between China and Thailand somewhere...

There are two campgrounds in Maree. The 2nd one just past town is a great nights entertainment in the spa or the cattleyard
Painted desert at sunrise must not be missed, trust me on this, it is out of your way a little, but really worth the effort
Check out all the springs, each one is different
To walk on South Lake eyre take the track a few k's before the signposted turn off. You can walk on the lake in complete isolation away from the tourist view
Miles and miles of Ghan ruins, the big bridge at Arckeburinga (sp) needs a fair bit of exploration time
It is in the rules that you must have at least one beer at William Creek Pub, dont break the rules even if you are only pasing through
Keep an open mind about Oodnadatta and get there in daylight to explore
Any 4wd advcie you receive at the Pink Roadhouse is generally gospel, it is a little different
Marla is dead boring as is the drive from Oodnadatta to there
Enjoy, take your time, the track is a destination of its own, not just the journey

It was like a freeway last time I been there...
As others said if you don't want surprises drop tyre preassure to 26-28psi and don't go above 80... SLOW down if there any incoming traffic - will save you some windscreen damage...

I usually drop tyre pressure to 24 psi and go around 100....

Dont miss Coward springs for an overnighter. We were there in '05 and it began to rain and had to high tail it off the track. The ground/track started to get very soft. Great coffee at Copley at the end of the track and great caravan park. Scones and tea for morning tea at the park, gratis.

The other comment would be to drop in on Dennis at the Pink Roadhouse. He is a real character and can tell you about everything regarding the track and its sights. He wrote the huge sign at Marla and the numereous signs made from 20 litre drum lids, half pink of course, that direct you for hundreds of kilometres in every direction. Such is his commitment to the health and safety of the traveller and the wellbeing of the locals (tourist dollar).
