  • Giru caravan park

A friend is thinking of going fishing around Giru near Townsville and wants to know about the caravan park there.

Can't seem to find anything worthwhile and thought perhaps someone on forum might be able to help.

I worked in Ayr years ago and the Barratas (?) was pretty good for mud crabs.

    Any help appreciated.

    G'day Pedro

I got to drive past it but never stopped in so I don't have a lot of info for you .... and what's available on the net is pretty limited .... as Giru gets absorbed into an ever expanding Townsville ... but the is a bit of info Here

This bit was on another site ... and talks about great fishing and some tasty muddies.

This is serious fishing country where they come from far and wide to stalk the barramundi and grunter which swim free in the Haughton River and such tributaries as Morris and Bradders Creeks. Yummy mud crabs are also on the local fishing menu.

      Thanks for that Chippy.

At least the fishing and crabbing still appear to be the go.

Hopefully someone will have stayed at the park and can make comment.

Never seen or heard of any caravan park at or near Giru.
There are plenty of tourists go down that way and park their vans in a public park that has toilets and showers I believe, with no fee. You are camped under the shade of big tamarind, and mango trees on a fairly flat piece of mowed grass. This ground is located in the middle of the township and is surrounded by a school, railway line, and just near the manned police station.
The other spots that are more popular are Cromarty creek boat ramp, which is about 5 - 10 mins from Giru which has toilets and solar street lights over a big flat dirt bank. This spot is free too, and houses many caravans over the winter season. It is a popular spot for locals who camp also. Sandflies and mosquitoes can be bad at times, particularly at sundown, as there is groves surrounding the place. This spot is on the bank of the Haughton river, and the weir upriver is stocked with Barra. The weir flowed over a fair bit this year so there should be lots of them around. There is lots of big crocs in this system. I have seen many over 15 foot towards the mouth. Can catch big barra at the mouth and also up Burrumbush which is a big creek on the left towards the mouth. That is the spot to go croc watching.
The other spot that is only 10 - 15 mins south of Giru which is also on a bank of a river is called Morrisseys Creek, or barramundi creek. The camp ground here is next to the boat ramp, with the same style of toilets, and a couple of solar lights over the ramp also. The camping on the bank here is more open and usually windy, so the mozzies and sandflies are not as bad. This creek can crab well at times and fingermark are commonly caught here. Big barra at the mouth also.
Both the boat ramp spots are free and popular. Also both of them have no fresh water so bring your own or duck into Giru for a shower, or beer. Both spots can fish and crab well. 2 or 3 weeks ago people were bagging out with crabs. This will slow during winter as crabs hibernate.
Get fuel from 10kms south at Greenacres. You can get groceries from the local shop at Giru, who used to sell fuel but not sure if he still does.
