  • Sydney to Alice Springs

    Gday,

Im heading out to Alice Springs in February for 2 weeks. What are the must see places out there?
The places so far as definates are:
    1. Uluru
    2. Olgas
    3. Kings Canyon
    4. McDonnell Ranges - don't know which places yet.

The route is from Sydney to Alice via Broken Hill.

I plan to come back through NW NSW via Inaminka and Cameron Corner. Is this possible with the closure of the Simpson over summer?

    Thanks in advance

    Jonny

    Re: Sydney to Alice Springs

    Hi Jonny,

You may find this thread of interest. viewtopic.php?f=26&t=4726 I have yet to add the part from Pt Augusta up to Alice but I will try and get it done this weekend.

Also I will try and get the latest 4wd trips of Central Australia uploaded to a file server for everyone.

Firstly a general warning - It is going to be extremely hot out here in Feb - Also come prepared for lots of flies, bring a wide brimmed hat and a fly net to go over it.

Okay you are planning on Ayers Rock and Kings Canyon, from there take the Mereenie loop road to Glen Helen resort. On the way take the time to check out Gosse Bluff. From Glen Helen head east along the West Macdonnell ranges until you hit Larapinta Drive then turn right and head west to Palm Valley and the Finke River Gorge NP.

From Palm Valley head back east along Larapinta Drive to Alice. There are lots of things to check out around Alice but I do recommend a visit to the Desert Park.

I will add to this thread over the weekend.

    Cheers

    Mav

      Jonny,
Don't forget about the East MacDonald ranges as well, particularly in the mornings. It is less travelled but just as interesting. One day will see you through all the features with some walking thrown in.

Well normally I would agree with you Martin but just lately we have been doing some exploring out to the east and I have to say that now I think to do the eastern Mac's justice it will take at least 3 days. I would start by heading from Alice up to Gem Tree then use the 4wd tracks to come in to Arltunga then out to Ruby Gab then back to Ross River. Then Ross River to N'Dhala Gorge, Trephina Gorge, then back to Alice. This would take about 3 days what with stopping to walk around and explore the places.

          True Mav,
I was thinking of just the range not the surrounding area but the suggestions that you have made would make a great trip.
