  • The 4X4 Trail: Northern Rivers of NSW

I have heard about a drive in Northern Rivers of NSW called the 4X4 Trail. It believe it goes from from Woodenbong in the north to Nymboida in the south. I guess the first part Woodenbong to Jackadgery will pretty much follow the Clarence Way. It is the section from Jackadgery to Nymbodia I am not too sure about. Does anybody have any experience of this drive?

I am sure if you do a search you will find a number of post on this already.

    Website:

The track can be done in a soft roader in the dry, but during the wet it is a completely different story. The NPWS close sections after heavy rain. Be very careful doing this track in heavy rain as a number of the rivers will become impossible to cross if you have a chainsaw take it as there always seems to be trees down.

It's a good drive with a number of nice spots to camp along the way.

      Thanks Spurio

That website is helpful. Have you done the trip yourself? Can you recomend a map that would show the roads mantioned on the website?

        Hi Jim,

I'm doing this trail with two other vehicles real soon.

Spurio gave me a great head-start... better quality info from Spurio then the myriad of NSW Visitor Info Centres that handed me around from one region to the next and back again.

Best Maps are from NRMA. They are free for NRMA members, otherwise $6.95.
        • TOURING MAP 6 - FAR NORTH COAST NSW [/*:m:5zrb8lfh]
        • TOURING MAP 5 - CENTRAL WEST, NEW ENGLAND, NW (this one covers just a small section of the trip)[/*:m:5zrb8lfh]

Satisfactory map: Cartoscope Touring Maps - Northern Rivers (North Coast & interland NSW) - Free from the NSW VIC.

        Cheers,
        LFaR.

I haven't be out there for about 3 months or so Jim. There were a couple of bridges out around Kyogle but they should be fixed by now. There were low water crossings around all of them anyway.

During the holidays quite a few dirt bikes get up there and some of the camps at the Northern end get pretty busy with all the border jumpers but down south you should be able to find a nice quite spot on the river, great if you have kids, pinch a couple of pairs of the missus stockings throw some mince meat into the feet and catch some yabbies.

Toonumbar Dam is a bit of a derro hang out on the weekend and during holidays, but is OK mid-week. I think it is still $5 a night.

There are heaps of areas to explore at the southern end around Dorrigo, Ebor, Glen Innes, Guy Fawkes. The Old Grafton to Glen Innes Road is a nice drive, where there is a tunnel that convicts dug out of sold rock.

You may need to carry water for some of the campsites if you camp in the mountains as the water is a little dodgy.

I'm sure you will have fun as you explore some of the new 2009 WRC around the Kyogle end.

We will be one day ahead of you, leaving from Woodenbong on the 27th and returning on the 31st. There are two Prados and a Navara in our little group.

It will be great to compare notes and pics when we return.

All the best for a safe and trouble-free trip.

              Cheers,
              LFaR.
