Great Central Road : Laverton, to Warburton, Warakurna etc

I have to drive up the Great Central Road this Sunday on a business trip. Out through Laverton, to Warburton, Warakurna and then Sandy Blight Road through to Kintore and then down to Yulara, Blackstone and back to Kalgoorlie.

And the best thing is I get to do it in my work 4WD and don't have to worry about fuel costs.

Wish I was taking my own 2009 GXL T/dsl though to give it a work out!

For those interested.

Warakurna (Giles) to Kintore via Sandy Blight Track 390km took 6.5 hours. The roughest section of 220km took 4 hours.

Damage: Flexiglass canopy has shattered and busted all mounts. These has previously been broken and dealer welded mountings to vehicle tub. Long range fuel tank used to be 145 litres - I think it is now only 130 litres due to being battered by river stones on one section of track where the wheel ruts were deeper than my suspension could cater for. One Hella spot light has broken it's mount.

Sand dunes were easily negotiated in 2nd high. Plenty of wrecks - mostly XA/XB Falcons (including a XB GS 500 panel van) and old Holdens, plus one Valiant Charger and a school bus from Warburton - not bad for a 4wd track.

Water bore hand pump 116km from Kintore was littered with dirty kimbies and empty Emu Export cans. No guesses for who left these.

Heaps of camels and dingoes and wild dogs - less the four dogs that I shot along the way.

Plenty of Len Beadell plaques along the way including 26th Parallel, WA/NT state border, 23rd Parallel and a heap of side tracks to some big hills.

2 x Bridgestone Dueller 694 destroyed heading back to Warburton from Warakurna. At 28psi I think the heat got to them after the bashing they got along the track.

Large sections of the Great central Road West of Warburton are currently being graded and the road is in pretty good condition through to the WA NT border. There are still the usual pockets of corrugations but generally it's pretty easy to sit on a 100km/hr or so.

The section immediately east of Warburton is undulating and a bit rough so watch your speed for the first 10 - 15km.

They have also put in some rest areas which has been long overdue.

The burgers at the Tjukayirla Roadhouse are great so stop in and say hello to Andrew.
