  • Public Water Taps

Doing a trip from Perth to Darwin to Alice to Adelaide to Perth and all points in between come June over about 4 months towing my caravan. Have been told that many towns have public water taps where we can top up caravan water tanks without need to go into a caravan park as we like camping out and have our own in built facilities.

Can anyone advise the location of any taps you are aware of in WA/NT/SA where we might be able to get water please :?:

Quite a lot of the roadside rest areas I have stopped at have rainwater tanks with taps.

Thanks TP. I believe that might be the case in the east and top end but here in the west it is rare.

      Any other suggestions please?

        Re: Public Water Taps

Once upon a time, it was not a problem to find a free water tap. With all the news of drought and councils needing to charge us all for water usage, I suspect that any public taps you find will have had the handle removed. A sign of the times.

Before leaving, I suggest you call several of the councils along your route. Hopefully they can guide you to a free tap in their jurisdiction. Alternately, perhaps some caravan parks will allow you to fill up for free (or at least low cost).

        Cheers,
        LFaR.

This might help in planning your trip. Doesn't actually show water availability but at least you can find out where the rest stops are.

Just be wary of the roadside water tanks, I have seen too many of them where the water inside is contaminated, usually some idiots think it is a great idea to put crap in the tanks or they are full of mossie larvae.

                  Re: Public Water Taps

Like above, I worry a lot about public tanks but I'm fine with running water. I guess some places it's hard to find running water so you take a gamble. You can buy chlorine tablets to kill anything living in the water if there is a concern. More a hiking type tablet but I'm sure you can get larger ones to suit a 20l jerrycan.

                    Re: Public Water Taps

On the Tasman Peninsula (in Tassie) they have very low rainfall. We tried to find water there after using all of ours up and drove for hours all over the place. Eventually we had to drive off the peninsula (or buy at the shop for a rediculous price). A few days later we found a corner shop which sold their tank water (with no guarantee of quality - they made sure of that) for $2 per litre  Think I'd rather drink diesel.
