  • Preparation for the Snow

In July, we are going to the snow for the first time. I will only be driving to the place we are staying in the snow but it will sit there for 6 days. We are not going off road. What do I have to do to the car to prepare it for the cold conditions? I am assuming it will need different coolant but not sure what else. Like I said, I haven’t been there before so all info will be appreciated.
    Thanks
    Scott.

    Re: Preparation for the Snow

    Coolant is the main thing.

Chains. You will need to carry chains, these can be hired most places. Don't expect to use them, but you should be familiar with fitting them just in case.

Tyres. If they're low on tread depth, do yourself a favor before the trip.

Shovel and window scraper. Take these to dig yourself out and let you see safely after doing so.

We usually tie some rope across the roof to make it easier to remove snow. Plastic shovels also help without damaging paintwork. Might try a tarp this year. The snow authorities where we go (Falls Creek) have been coming down hard on people driving off with a load of snow on the roof. There has been a few accidents caused by it falling in the path of oncoming vehicles, so can't really blame them.

This will be the first year for us in the Prado, should be good compared to the feeble people mover we had been taking...

If you car has diesel engine, make sure that you fill up with Alpine diesel... If driving on the snow be ready to drop tyre preassures...

Thanks for the quick replies folks. Is there a particular coolant that you choose to use? Also, the rope sound interesting but I can't understand how that makes the snow easier to get off :?
        Thanks

          Re: Preparation for the Snow

The rope goes across the roof of the car. When you drag it over, it effectively cuts the snow load and breaks up the crusty layer. It reduces the work to remove it all.

Every bit helps when it's below zero and you're trying to get off the mountain...

[edit] You put the rope on when you arrive, so it's under the snow...
