Whats Pager duty Mav ?

On a different note, what happens to roads like the Finke road from Finke to the Highway if it gets really wet ? 500 support vehicles and 2 inches of rain could make for an interetsing day :|

I am on call which means I have to wear a pager in case the shift engineer needs support help. So it means I have to stay in pager coverage range and be ready to go to work at a moments notice, it sucks cause basically I have to stay in town and cannot have any alcohol etc for the entire two weeks I am on pager duty.

I was all set to be a sweep car this year but I got stuck with pager duty again so that put paid to that.

Pager duty! I thought that technology was obsolete. I remember carrying one of these when I was 'on call' in the 90s, but that was before the advent of mobile phones, sms and email/internet! How retro. :?

Unfortunately we are not allowed to take mobile phones into my work place due to security issues. So pagers are still used to fill this need.

I some times carry 2 pagers, 1 for the volunteer fire brigade & 1 for work when im on call.
I have tried to talk work out of using the pager & just diverting a number to the mobile of whoever is on call but they just wont have it.
Fire brigades will be using pagers for a long time yet, its still the best way to contact 20 people at the same time.

Looking forward to Finke as well, 4 days off and cant wait. Were going down to Finke this year where all the big jumps are. Although most of the vehicles dont always make it that far on the first day. No phone reception, no TV reception and no worries.

I used to read about the Finke Desert race in some motorcycle magazines. ADB in particular and what do you know - I still have the magazine, [1984 issue 65 vol.11, no.5] . The fastest desert race in the southern hemisphere.

Reading about dirt bike racing was all I could afford back then. Some things never change!

FWIW a Peter Stayt won the Bike class back in 1984. Wonder what he is doing these days?

For anyone that is up there and wants to catch up, Myself (steve) and Speedcomm (tim) will be up there from the thursday before the event till the tuesday if anyone wants to catch up. We are Pit Crewing for car 810 , Mickey Thompson Sponsered XJ Jeep. Come and say hello at Scruttinering. You wont miss the car!!

Our road trip starts on Tuesday week. We are taking Tims prado 120. 3 blokes and a shit load of gear! the jeep is being pulled by a Crewman....lucky it has a fuel card becasue when pulling the trailer it drops a tank in about 300k's! hoping we get 1200 or so from the prado.we can't wait, Going to be a great trip.

The Finke course has been getting a bit of rain over the last few days and it is predicted to get a heap more over the coming few days. This could be a mud bath race this year. :lol:

Well for you guys coming up for the Finke it is definitely going to be a wet one I think, the track has been getting a constant wetting for the last few days but today it is getting a drenching. It started raining here at 2:30 am this morning and has not stopped yet. Up until 2:30 am this morning our year rainfall total was 17mm however since 2:30 am we have registered another 20mm and it is still raining. Some localised flooding around the town areas and the storm drains are all flowing.

Shes been rain all right, still it will be a good Finke this year. Just spent the morning first off quite early with a 6am callout. Seems like the electrical grid lost 2 phases this morning or it could have been the service fuses, I just dont know. I always happen to get callouts when it rains long enough. Went to Desert Dwellers for some very needed camping gear, namley a poo shelter and toilet for those personel moments. Anyhow seems to be my day of failures today. Ive had a problem in the right indicator all week now and decided to get some bits and fix the problem. I must have pulled everything apart and found nothing and I happened to get it going somehow after about 5 hours. Im still scratching my head. Its bloody cold outside as well, my fingers were frozen. Its a shame though I need to air the camper.

It will good to catchup Steve, maybe Thursday as wee are heading down to Finke Friday arvo. If the road is too wet to drive the Old South Rd we have to go via Kulgera, the bitumen way always takes the fun out of it. Its going to be an interesting journey into Finke and back out as well. Thank god I bought some muddies.

Too right, it is colder than a nuns whatsit today. :lol: I reckon half of work were at Desert Dwellers today, when we were there the carpark was full and when we walked inside it was chockers with everyone from work. :lol: Well if it is too wet to go camping at least you can go and look at camping gear.
