I will be going to scrutineering tomorrow so might see you there. Probably will go out to the Prologue on Saturday, I will be heading off for Brissy on Sunday afternoon. Hopefully the approaching cloud pattern wil not dump any rain in th enext 48 hours, I have been watching it for the last 48 hours and it has grown in size though it looks to be being kept above Alice at the moment by the low pressure cell in the Bite.

          Re: Finke Desert Race?

I went out to the Prologue today which is where the contestants race the clock over a set course to determine their place in the start order for the Sunday and Monday of the race. I managed to get to the start/finish grandstand just before the 810 car was due to do its run at 8:37 am this morning. There was a cool westerly breeze but there was bright blue skies after a drizzly night. So here are some photos from today.

First off is car 810 leaving the start line and then coming back to the finish line.

          Now some other competitors:

Car 3 which has the pretty young school girls in front of it came to a misserable end half way to Finke, a fire started in around the spare wheel/engine bay and burnt it to the ground. 250k worth of engineering. what a shame.

I was listening to Race Control, as I was driving down the highway yesterday, on the UHF. I actually heard the clearance of car 810 past one checkpoint.

Shame about car 3, nobody likes to hear of that sort of loss. Those girls were friends of the lady I was talking to which is why I took the photo.

Thanks mate, I have photos of just about every car and buggy. I did not bother with the bikes as I was running short on time.

                      Re: Finke Desert Race?

Another Finke finished until next year. Friday was a bit wet for us camping 1klm North from Bundooma water tank on the old Ghan railway line. This is at the 140klm mark from the start from Alice and also the start of the dunes that runs on the edge of the Simpson Desert. A nice and peaceful camping spot away from the crowds and the party atmosphere. Heres some pics-

Our veiw East at sunset, you could hear the camels over the otherside of the dunes at night.

Our camping spot for 3 nights.

Pics of the competitors racing past

This buggy was leading the race on the frist day but ended up not so good by about halfway.

                        Re: Finke Desert Race?

I almost forgot, if your traveling up or down the ghan railway line between Rodinga and Finke watchout for dog spikes. I mean there are millions of them and they love tyres. Its not so bad driving in the red sand but once you hit the dirt where its hard packed they can do some damage if your not on the ball.

I must have picked up close to one hundred of theses out from of our camping spot. Thinking back I should have been carrying 2 spares, which I hadnt.

Its no wonder why there are so many wrecks beside the road.

                          Re: Finke Desert Race?

I have just seen this thread, but as you can see by my photo below, this buggy would suit this track hehehe.
We have a track maker for the mod we are doing, and any information on the Finke Desert Rally would be awesome.
Mainly need GPS locations, or a Google Earth location, and the trackmaker will go from there.
Any photos you have of the track itself, whether it be trackside buildings, run down old cars, trees, scenery
would be a wicked asset to our team. Our site is in my sig if anyone is interested.
Mav, it would be a great asset to our team if you can give me permission to post some of your photos on our website
for our painters of which I am one of them, we will use some of these photos for references on paint schemes for
                          the buggies.
