  • 4WD trips in New Zealand (North Island)

    Hi Guys,

just wondering if anyone can suggest some 4WD trips in the North Island of New Zealand? A job oppurtunity is seeing me move over there for 6 to 10 months almost immediatley. I will be looking at hiring or having as part of the work deal a 4WD (preference on a Prado) and would love to get out there and see a few things. Will be doing all of the usual touristy things while the family are there but want to do more than the usual (where time permits)

What a great opportunity Nick, make the most of it mate. I spent a month or two on the North Island with work but I cannot help with the 4x4 tracks. I reckon the South Island would be beaut for doing 4WDing, I have been there too and loved it.

      Thanks Mav.

I think there are a couple of PPs in NZ so maybe catch them around the place. Might be off as soon as Tuesday which is a real bummer since I go across the Simpson in two and a half weeks. Things are going to be tight

Where are you going to be based? The South Island has more opportunities than the North Island for simply just "going for a drive" so to speak, whereas in the North Island it pays to be a member of a 4wd club. Having said that there are a couple of good 4WD parks in the Upper North Island, one in Woodhill Forest and one in Hamilton. Some of you may have seen the Woodhill venue on recent episodes of 4wd tv

        Cheers

Good Stuff - PM me your details when you get over here and I'll take you to the Woodhill 4WD park for a bit of a rip around the forest - I haven't been yet so it'll be an experience for me as well.

              Schaffer,

I haven't lived there for a couple of decades, but a great day trip was up Mt Tarawera. (assuming it hasn't been gated off since I was there) There's a good hike from the top of the road then to do some scree walking. It was great fun doing about 2-3 m per stride.

Of course there's 90 mile beach and Te Paki (if my memory is correct) stream. And the beach at Dargaville.

Its a great place to spend your wekends
