  • Looking for tracks around Maitland/Newcastle

    Hi All,

I'll prefix this by saying I've probably posted this in the wrong section (sorry mods), and my lack of success using the search facility has prompted this post. So please bare with me.

I am relatively new to the Newcastle - Maitland area and to 4WDing in general. I am struggling to find any decent tracks to 'play' on within an hour's drive on a weekend. I have hit the obvious ones, like Stockton and the tracks immediately off the road up to Mt sugarloaf. I have also found a little area near West Wallsend, but that's about it. Can anyone who knows this area, suggest some tracks that are reasonable and within close proximity to Maitland.

    cheers
    David

Mate theres is tons of tracks around Maitland/Newy area. Wallaroo state forrest, some stuff at Medowie, tracks out at West wallsend/killingsworth from easy to extreme.

You just gotta know where to look and its probably easier to get someone to show you around. If your new to the area and 4wding, I'd reccomend you join a local 4wd club, that way you can get guidance with different challenges, meet new friends and theres always someone around to lend a hand or help when you need it (well in my club anyway  )

I joined Raymond Terrace club for 3 months, but in that time the trips clashed with my usually empty calendar, so didn't get to go on any. I kinda gave up on it. I'd be interested in meeting up with a few guys off PP if they were interested in showing me some tracks

What about the Watagan's - some reasonable tracks in there, and not too far away..

Another area is Colo heights area where GH4WD is the undisputed guru of the trails  I have not been able to make one recently but there are trips through there that takes up a good day drive.

Barrington Tops is another destination which makes an awesome weekend (see GTG pics).

A little Area near West Wallsend ?? Wow there are a fair few trails through there :?

Freemans waterhole there is an old quarry where they conduct the 4wd training and a powerlines trail

                        Hi Ryan,

I have played a bit around Wallsend and up Sugarloaf, as well as the Quarry at Freemans (recently trashed by TopGear Aust with caravans).

The Wattagans and Barrington Tops is where I'd like to get to know more. I would love to meet up with some fellow PP'ers and go for a tag-along with someone that knows a good track to visit.

                          David

Unfortunately wet weather we have had lately and the Watagans is not a happy mix and more damage is caused (to tracks and vehicles),rather than the fun it should be.
It is difficult coming into Christmas to pick a time to get out as weekends fill so quickly, but I'm sure we can get something going in the next few months either to Barrington or Watagans or somewhere 8) .

I'll shoot ye a PM when we are out and about next for a run.

Whenever there is to be a  storm or galeforce winds  Samo usually has a Stocko run  (sorry Samo its funny cos its true  ).
GH4WD as I said is undisputed guru of the trails Colo/ Lower Portland / Newnes and I believe Sunny Corner 8) always has a mystery trip somewhere going

                          Cheers Mate

If you didnt find them out back of sugarloaf there is a series of old train tunnels on the Richmond Vale that are worth checking out

I am currently driving from Central Coast to East Maitland/Rutherford once or twice a week, looking at the tracks off to the side of the freeway, wanting to take a detour  .
So, if anyones wants to go up there for a day trip, count me in... I'd love to give them a try. Stockton too, as long as Samo does not order and wind..
