  • Bendethra Valley

I was wondering if I could get some advice.

I want to head into deua then camp at bendethra valley, I will be coming from Canberra. Can someone suggest the best ie, easiest and fastest way to get down there. If anyone could let me know the ways they have got down there that would be great. I will be travelling with just the one truck.

    Thanks.

I agree with xvprado. I have been into this area 4 times in the past couple of years. The Moruya way is the easiest, although the last couple of kms into the valley can be a slight challenge in the wet. The last trip I did way about three weeks ago via the Merricumbene fire trail. If I was going to do this trip again (which I will) it will be along this track !

Be warned, it took 5 hours to do the 40 odd kms into the valley from Araluen rd. But boy was it fun. We had just my Prado and took it easy, my mate and I both agreed it would be a serious challenge in the wet... slippery. I wouldnt attempt it with just one vehicle in the wet.

I love Bendethera Valley, very secluded and beautiful scenery. When we left Bendethera, after doing the Merricumbene fire trail on the way in, we were constantly looking for more difficult tracks on the way out to Moruya. I cannot speak for the tracks in from the west (Canberra direction) although one of the previous trips we did drive up to the Big Hole in a mates Hi-lux. That truck had very good ground clearance.

      Hope this helps.

for anyone travelling around this area, i found out the inconvenient way over the Anzac long w/e that Araluen Rd is currently closed. Has been for a couple of months and will be for a lot longer i reckon. Details here http://www.esc.nsw.gov.au/community/...of-flood-event

Appreciate this is a few months late but I travelled the Araluen road from Braidwood to Moruya and despite the road "closure" they divert you through the National park along some fire trails and it doesn't take much longer. It is a very easy route, in fact we passed a Toyota Corolla going the other way (seriously!)

I'll bet the Corolla never made it into the valley though!! (we've had an XTrail in there once)

Even if Araluen Rd is closed there is no reason why you shouldn't go back the same way you came in (via Snowball).

Here is a trip report I did back in 2009:

I can send you an OziExplorer track file if your interested on how to go in via Snowball (PM me).

                Re: Bendethra Valley

This was an easy crossing through the Deua river last weekend. I think this photo is on the Mongaluma fire trail. We crossed it a few times between there and Bendethera. The river was flowing too strong at the 2nd crossing up to Mongaluma Mountain. At Bendethera the river was about 600mm on Saturday, 750mm on Sunday and I was told it was over 6 meters this morning after the floods on the south Coast. We got out before the rain moved from Sydney to Bega.

Bit of a pity this place is closed, they must have copped a pounding over the last few months to the point where damage to tracks was unmanageable.
