  • Non 4wd road trip - Darwin to Perth

    Gday all,

a mate has to get his car from Darwin to Perth and decided it would be a great road trip for a few of us boys. None of us have been up that way, north west WA, so arent sure of travelling times. The plan is to do it reasnobly casually, travelling most days, with a few rest days for a bit of fishing and sight seeing.

Any suggestions as to how long this should take? We can work out distances and rough travelling times but at this stage im wondering if there are any areas that may throw up some uncertainties in terms of how long.
I think the plan is to once we hit Broome, follow the coast/main highway down. We already realise the issue of going to all the better places, that are off the highway. That means more time travelling to and from them and eats into our available time. Any thoughts would be great.

    Thanks

a couple of months ago I did a trip from Perth to Bidgydanga (just short of Broome ) and return in 6 days and I am kicking myself that I did not at least take 2 weeks to do it so I would suggest at least 10 - 14 days if time permits other wise a month there are so many places to fish or just enjoy the sights eg .. Broome , La Grange ( if the locals let you in ) 80 mile beach , Pt Sampson , Cleverville , Onslow , Exmouth , Coral Bay , Shark-Bay , Kalbarri .... and all acccessable by car ... maybe take 6 weeks looking at just a couple of spots I mentioned ....

      Slug,
I have just done a trip around oz but did not go to Darwin.

I have our itinenary which includes Victoria River (385 km from Katherine) to Geraldton, with mileage and stop overs which could be of some assistance.
Please pm me if you want a copy.

As fishfinder said there are lots of places on the way where you should spend a bit of time.

Given that it is about 4,000km by road it would be difficult to do it any justice if you wanted to see anything off the main track to average more than about 500km per day. That's 8 days to get to Perth.

Have done it in 3 x long days, but the trips were about the destination, not the journey.

If you have the time, then take the time.....2 weeks I reckon...

            Thanks all for the replys.

I think the current thinking is 10 to 12 days. And yes, this isnt going to give us anywhere enough to time to see what i really want to see, but like Daz said, sadly this trip is orientated towards the destination and the end result of getting the Valiant from point A to point B, with a bit of rubber necking thrown in.

            We shall see..................

A Valiant -- you will have no problems stopping in to some of the communities on the way down
