    Hi all you Victorian PPers,

My wife and I are planning a quick trip from Perth to Melbourne for a New Years eve party in Melbourne but we will have a week after that and would like to see some of the High Country. We will have the Tvan and are well equipped to look after ourselves. We might bring our German Shepherd although we know that this will mean that we can't stay in the Parks areas. Last year we went through from Bright down Buckland Valley, Mt Selwyn got lost but ended up down at Talbotville. This was early November and was a little interesting in places with the Tvan.

Has anyone got some ideas for us - maybe an itinerary but also if any of you PPers are planning a trip out there could we join up with you.

I am starting a new job with Kubota on the 11th Jan so we are time restricted.

    Cheers

    Mike

Would love to meet up, but.... we are doing a tag-along tour of the high country starting 3rd Jan from Bright with Vic Widmans Great Divide Tours and the itinerary hasn't been sent to us yet.. They have 'secret' camping spots planned, so if I tell you, I will have to kill you, and me! :!: :!:

Anyway, keep a look out for a giant Pradopoint.com stickered Pearlie in with a group of others 4WD from 3rd - 9th Jan, and thereafter in Bright and surrounds for a couple of days before heading off again in a westerly direction.

Hope you have a great trip.. We intend to.. hence the diff breather extensions being fitted next week.
You're here for a good time, not a long time... Love my Prado...

It can get a little warm in the High Country that time of year, and then there's the heightened bushfire danger of course.
Not trying to put you off - it's still OK to visit in summer - just make sure you have a good AM/FM radio and check the local ABC stations several times a day for bushfire information. Keep an eye out for smoke too - obviously common sense applies on which way to head.
If you see a Ranger ( either Parks or DSE ) then stop and have a chat - they'll tell you if it's safe to go to any particular area and might tell you some good places too camp.
It's also a good idea that time of year to camp beside rivers as much as you can, so you can have a swim and cool off.
When you say "High Country" that's a lot of area - maybe if you can give use some general indication of the areas you are thinking of it would help ?
There's a classic trip I would recommend to new high country travellers, is through Dargo to the Wonnangatta Valley, then up via Zeka Spur and down into Licola, up over Mt. Skene into Jameison, maybe a few days camped on the Goulburn River, then into Mansfield, and up via Sheepyard Flat along the Howqua River, looking at some of the old cattlemen's Huts, Fry's hut, Bluff Hut, Upper Jameison Hut, walk into Ritchies Hut if you want a bit of exercise ( it's just been rebuilt after being burnt down a couple of years ago). Most of these have good camping and swimming nearby.
There's plenty of diversions/side trips on this route depending on what you are interested in and how challenging you want the track.
        Cheers, Wayne
