  • Mount Augustus Tourist Resort

Just reading the latest copy of Western 4WDriver last night and there is an article about the caravan park at Mount Augustus being closed for camping and fuel.

Seems the Health Department wasnt happy about the state of the ablution block (not without good cause) and told the park to fix it up. The operators refused so the park is now closed.

Its a bit of a bugger as the little patch of green lawn and the bar are a welcome relief if you've been out roughing it for a few days. Hopefully things will be sorted out and the place will open up again. Its quite a spectacle to wake up too, no photo I have seen has really done it justice. Mind you, the name always makes me laugh, its hardly a resort.

Bugger, that's one place I wanted to stay and have a look at Mt Augustus.

So begs the question apart from maybe Cobra station nearby where does any stay as alternative ?

    Any suggestions appreciated.

I think Cobra is the only option.

Sure, the facilities weren't that crash hot, but its in the middle of no-where! seriously..

Hrm...as for other places, need to go through my photos, I seem to recall some official unofficial spots...but none that are going to give you power/fuel (obviously)..

Contacted the Canarvon tourist info center.

There advice/info is below - apart from the Cobra station accommodation option.

Mount Augustus outback resort is closed at the moment due to a change over of management they are hoping to be open by April but it will depend on whether they can get a suitable person to take over the management position.

Take on face value and see what happens

Anybody stayed at Cobra believe its fairly close to Mt Augustus

            Re: Mount Augustus Tourist Resort

Never been to Cobra but I think its around 50-60kms away (west). Its going to be interesting to see how DEC manages the place while the caravan park is closed, they used to have camp guides at the park and they assisted in keeping track on who was climbing etc. I guess now they will be stationed at the start of the summit climb. Its a bastard of a climb, 6kms up (and down) and it never seems to end. Give me Uluru any day.

The road north to Dooley Downs etc goes right through Mount Augustus station, you have to dodge all the usual station buildings and rubbish to get to it, so thats going to be intereting as well.

When we stayed there this was a discussion point on how loosely the term Resort is used.....

But the facilities were clean and the beer cold..

Went to Cobra station for a drive had lunch then a swim at Cattle Pool.

                Re: Mount Augustus Tourist Resort

                Just a small update

Mt Augustus resort is open for business.

The place has been given a good clean up and looked presentable to me, but due to not knowing it was or wasn't open I stayed at Cobra 40 odd kms west

There will be a few restrictions, they can hand you a BBQ pack but not allowed to cook it for you.

And BYO beer etc by doing this they will prevent issues with locals coming to buy supplies and drinking it due to their land being dry.

Not sure of fuel supplies either, but like most out odf the way places would be very expensive

Also suggest taking plenty of drinking water as its scarce in the area, Cobra however has very good quality bore water you can drink without boiling.

Telstra phonecards are also required whilst travelling in this area Murchison, cobra, Mt augustus, Millstream NP all had card only type phones. Aust post in country towns sell them but they do have a expiry date
