  • Anyone been 4wding around Walhalla? **Review/Pics up**

Didn't think this fitted the 'Favourite Destinations' or 'Trip Reports' categories so I'll throw it in here.

Just looking for any advice on good tracks and/or campsites around Walhalla, VIC?

Just planning on going Easter sat/sun and looking for a rough idea.

    Thanks!

Re: Anyone been 4wding around Walhalla?

        What are you looking for?
I just came back from there this weekend and have done 2 other long weekends down there in the last 6 weeks, so I have seen a lot of the tracks and camping spots over that time.
Are you looking for easy, or medium, or parts if you get wrong you will need to winch etc
Give me some guidelines as to what you are looking for and I'll be able to give you as much info as you need !!

        cheers

Re: Anyone been 4wding around Walhalla?

There is a wealth of different grades of 4WDing, camping spots, and mining history down there. It all depends what you are looking for.
You could do worse than starting out by travelling north of Walhalla, over the Thompson Dam, and exploring the Aberfeldy/Donnelly's Creek/Store point area. Walk in to the water wheel and some of the other relics. There's a few good camping areas in there, but they can get a bit "feral" on busy weekends. ( like easter ) . Mind you anywhere at Easter is gonna be the same.
There's some good maps of the area put out by Rooftop and Rudi Polleiti ( Adventure Maps ).
These give you some insight into the history of the area and some very interesting sites to visit.
There's some fairly challenging tracks in that area too, if that's what you are after.
Closer to Walhalla for challenge there's the various Deep Creek tracks, you'll see them on the maps above. But I'd be going with another vehicle if trying those.
          Cheers, Wayne

Thanks guys, I'd be looking at tracks around about medium difficulty, don't mind trying something a little harder but don't want anything really 'hardcore'

Always looking for a good photo although don't specifically want to go there just to see the history of the place

Re: Anyone been 4wding around Walhalla?

              Here is a few suggestions:
NOTE. Between 6 weeks ago and last weekend the track conditions changed heaps, with the track getting cut up. Some of these tracks are getting on the harder side of medium, depending if you go up or down them so by easter they may be worse. One of our group took the wrong line and dropped a back wheel in a hole and we had to winched other wise he would have gone over. BE WARNED

              1. Get a rooftop map -Wallhalla-Licola
              2. Camping is going to be hard to find unless someone in the group can get down early, There is lots of camping in O'tooles and little O'tools on the Donnelly creek track but you will be with the trail bike crowd and 50 kids going around and around in circles from dawn to dusk. There are other camping spots along Donnellys creek rd but they are pretty popular. At the bottom of trig track on the Abberfeldy is a small spot next to a good swimming hole, big enough to take 5 vehicles. At the Abberfeldy and Pheasant track the same but not as good. A couple of small spots on Fultons Creek track
              2. Tracks - All these are harder going up
Flats track - north to south (nice rock ledge climb that you will struggle with , but there is a bypass)
              Toombon
              Toomstar
              Army track- north to south
              Fultons - west to east
              Fultons creek track
Trig track - lots of switchbacks
              Pheasant track
Beardmores (underneath the dam wall - not hard but good view of the spillway)
The deep creek tracks (1 to 5) - mostly pretty easy some rock steps coming out of the creek on deep creek 1 going south to north. Some of the others have some good bits as well

That should keep you busy for a weekend

              cheers

Re: Anyone been 4wding around Walhalla?

Riding unregistered trail bikes ( and especially kids riding them ) in camping areas in State forests is breaking the law. Parents have been booked.
It probably will still continue though - depends if the rangers and police decide to patrol again over Easter.
                Cheers, Wayne

Thanks for the info guys - probably heading that way myself too.

My plan is to go Walhalla -> Woods Point -> Marysville (over three days). Hoping to take mostly 4WD tracks in order to avoid the 'maddening crowds'. Also definitely bush camping so as not to end up with some twat and his sub-woofer next to me...! Here's hoping for some peace and quiet...

Re: Anyone been 4wding around Walhalla?

                        A successful weekend!

Can't remember the exact names of all the tracks we went on though as my mate in his 80 series was the map holder/reader.
Know I went down a track that followed a creekbed for 200m and also know we did Deep Creek tracks (3 of them).

Great 4wding to be had, lots of steep sections which would have been a nightmare in the wet. Some good places where we had to crawl over some rocks too.

Came across a Maverick just about to go up one of the deep creek tracks... with a blown front diff :| I can imagine he was there for a fair while! luckily had 2 other vehicles backing him up. Also came across an 80 Series which had lost it's brake master cylinder... at the top of a steep hill. Don't know how he fared but once again had other vehicles backing him up.

Didn't have a problem finding a campspot, all the major ones were taken but there were about half a dozen smaller ones we had the choice of off some of the harder tracks.

                        Few photos from the trip:

Taken on the track that followed the creek for 200m

Lots of loose rock like this, bash plate also got a massive workout

Creek crossings a plenty, all were nice and easy but might be deeper after rain

Mates 80 series struggled up this hill which I had no probems with

At the end of the trip, notice the removed side steps after one of them was knocked backwards causing scrubbing on one of the rear tyres

The snorkel & bash plate look the goods. Nice to see a some more pics of the 90 shape out there.

Thanks, yeh you'll have a ball out there. We just went for 2 days but could have spent a week there. So many tracks of varying difficulties and a lot of tracks with an easy and hard option.

Yeh I love the bash plate and snorkel, trying to make it stand out in a crowd! Got heaps of future plans for it which will make it stand out further, but all will be pricey custom work such as 2" bodylift, 4 or 5 inch suspension lift and either 33 or 35" tyres depending on how crazily I have to mod it to fit them, 33's should be easy enough with a body lift.
