I drove the GOR about 2 years ago and loved it. The only advice i was given, was take the back way through the forest and come out at the Appossoles, and then drive north up the GOR. This way you dont get stuck behind the coachs and other slow drivers and have a much better run up the GOR. There is tons of places to pull over and have a squiz, etc.

Apollo bay is a nice place to stop, and there is accommodation to stay in there from memory too. We did the Avalon airport -> Appossles -> Melb CBD in one day without really missing too much. Enjoy the scenery, its well worth it, however that being said if you ever get the chance to do the Almalfie coast in italy, it makes the GOR look like the Sydney -> Melbourne freeway in comparison!!

      Where to start.......
How long have you got down there. You could spend weeks down there to see everything. We have been going down there for years and still keep saying we must go to x,y,z, next time.
It really is in 3 sections. You have the anglesea through to Apollo bay section where the road follows the coast through little villages (and a couple of big ones) spectacular views etc over the sea and along the coast. You can get into some of the hills behind if you want some 4wd-ing as well and the glow worms are worth a look at. Apollo Bay is a good place to stay. nice eating spots and beach. You can go out fishing or seal watching from the marina there etc etc.
There are lots of walks you can do in the forest areas behind going back in about 40km with lots of waterfalls to walk to, nice drives through the bush etc etc.
The second secion is where the road goes inland around cape otway. There are some nice areasdown there with good deserted beaches to get to etc and some nice tracks if you know where to look.
The road then gets back to the coast around at the 12 Apostles/Port Campbell etc. There are some great walks down to various beaches/cliffs/holes/gorges all the way along here and you could spend a while looking around here as well. There are usually a fair few people around this section.
If you like walking you could do some of the great ocean walk (8 days total, but plenty of spots to stop and start)
You will find some info at the Apollo Bay info centre (and probably some of the other info centres as well)
      cheers

I second Apollo Bay as a nice place to base yourself for a couple of days. ( or nearby Skenes Creek )
Go down to the wharf and get fresh fish, cook it up for tea.
Visit the Otway Fly ( raised walkway over trees ) and the Lighthouse.
Do a couple of drives in the Otways.
take a walk on some remote beaches.
                Cheers, Wayne

                  Hey Samo,

Will you be solo or with the rest of the family. A great place we have stayed at is the King Parrot cottages, which are about 20min inland from Lorne at Deans Marsh. It will earn you some brownie points with SWMBO.

                  http://www.kingparrot.com.au/

Also there is a range of accomodation from caravan parks to the plus motels. Also make the effort and go as far as Port Fairy. Great little fishing village about 60klm past the western end of the GOR. Just be aware that is can get very fresh along here is the colder months for the year. That southerly breeze has a nice bite to it.

                    Re: GR8 ocean road

The best part of the GOR is between Apallo Bay and Anglesea.
There is also a plethora of 4wd tracks in this area that go up into the hills and give you some really good coastal views.
I usually stay at the campground at Cumberland River, just 10 minutes from Lorne. Its an amazing spot with beach access and a spectacular cliff running through the park!
The Meredian 'Otways' map is a pretty good reference for the area.

                          Re: GR8 ocean road

It's a great spot to head to when the weather is warm. Might have to drag my family over that way at some stage. I havn't been along the GOR for about 15 years I reckon (about the time I got married if my brain still works).
