  • Route along the east coast

    Hi

Am planning a 3 week trip up the east coast in December, any ideas of stopovers or itinerary? I have a 1 year old daughter so time will be limited in the vehicle. I look forward to any suggestions.

    Cheers

    Hi psychodiscokid

Are you looking for off road opportunities? How far up the coast are you headed?

Possibly as far as Mackay? Off road would be good, however, not to difficult!!

Some quick tips from Grafton through to Brisbane...

When you get around Grafton, you could decided to travel either the Summerland Way or continue up the Pacific Hwy.

East of Grafton is Yaraygir NP, with many excellent stopovers. E.g. Station Creek, Wooli (I can recommend the Solitary Islands Marine Resort - esp get a campsite on the river front), Digger's Camp, Minnie Water to mention just a few. There is a track between Station Creek and Wooli called Colletts Crossing Rd, which is very entertaining, though may be impassable in the wet due to flooding. Continuing up the hwy other places I can recommend include Yamba/Iluka, Byron Bay (naturally), Pottsville caravan park on the river. After that you'll be at the Gold Coast, so whatever takes your fancy there; basic accom around the headlands or the bright lights of the strip or continue on to Brissy for that experience.

If you head up the Summerland Way, it will take you through some of the most picturesque country-side on offer for North Eastern NSW. Some of my favourite roads are out that way including Old Tenterfield Hwy, through Busbys Flat then onto Cherry Tree Rd heading into Mallanganee. There's a lookout on the corner of Bruxner Hwy and Bulmers Rd, which is well worth the stop. From there take the Cambridge Plateau Forest Rd up through the Richmond Range to eventually rejoin Summerland Way. You can camp at many places or other accomodation is in the area. From here head up the Mount Lindsey Hwy into Beaudesert and ultimately onward to Brissy.

        Cheers,
        LFaR.

          Maybe first day........

Up the pacific Highway, duck in to Port Macquaire (about 3.5 to 4 hours), cross the river on the punt (settlement Pt)..... do the Pt Plommer managemnt track up to Point Plommer about an hour, or another 30 minutes to Crescent Head, both great camping spots. 4WD only, but quite doable with a camper or off road van. Fantastic beaches, great scenery great camping spots. (or Cabins at Crescent).
From Crescent, drop onto the beach (at Richardsons Crossing)....... half hour run up to Hat Head....... Fish & Chips at Hat, then back onto the beach and another half hour run up the beach to Arakoon / South West Rocks....... Lots of accomodation options there.
