  • Ayres Rock Excursions

I will be at Ayres Rock mid-August for work, but will have one, maybe two days at leisure. Are there any day trips I could do if I hired a 4wd out of there? I don't want to have to cart a snatch strap and shackles with me, so I suppose anything I attempt shouldn't be too hardcore.

I know Kings Canyon is some 300 k's away, but would it be feasable to do a long day out and back to see that for example?

    Cheers,

From memory, there's nothing much out that way you're going to need a 4WD for
as all the roads you're likely to be on will be tar. (No real 4WD tracks out there you can
use legally). A regular 2WD hire car would be fine (and cheaper) in my opinion anyway.

If you don't mind a long day, then Kings Canyon is definitely worth a visit. The walk up over
the top of the rim, and down into the 'Garden of Eden' is well worth it, as I'm sure many of
the 2009 GTG attendee's will agree.

it's about 300kms to Kings Canyon so 600kms round trip plus allow 3hrs for the rim walk. By the time you add in time for lunch, etc, would be a longish day but doable. Only real problem I'd imagine is you'd end up doing the walk pretty much in the middle of the day and if it's hot, that might be an issue.

If going to Kings Canyon I'd go down the night before then do the rim walk early morning. It might be a little uncomfortable doing 300km, the 3 hr walk in the middle of the day then returning to Uluru.
But you won't see the best bits unless you do the walk.
Then there's the Olgas of course which is an easy day trip from Uluru. The valley of the Winds walk is the pick of the walks.

All easy 2WD, a little Corrola or something hired from Uluru would do it., or i'm sure ther'd be organised tours from the hotel.

Also think about the guided tours run by the local Aboriginal community, these can be booked from the main visitor centre.
        Cheers, Wayne

Alternativly you could just hang At Ayres

          Sunset viewing is good
You could spend a day in the winds walk at the other place (cant remember the name)

Kings canyon would be good but you would be looking at a big day
Dont list all ya mods, you will only be more upset when i get further

The Olgas or now renamed as Kata Tjuta.

Went there in about 1996 and I liked Kata Tjuta over Uluru but both are interesting to see.

Thanks for the feedback - in my ignorance I was of the impression that apart from the main road everything else was fairly ordinary gravel. I'm glad that a small hire car will suit, the prices for a 4wd were atrocious.
