    G'day...thanks for reading this .

Can anyone give me some info on a trip from Alice going west to Surveyors General Corner ? I've been told that you may have to not only pay the indigenous people but also take one along to ensure you do the right thing ?
    Is this correct ?

    Cheers

    I believe so.

I went there with friends in the 80's and even then I needed a permit to enter the Pitjantjatjara Lands. I have heard that you need pay your respects to the local people and I for one would have no trouble doing that or taking one along with me on a visit to the corner. The short time I spent with people in Pipalyatjara gave me some of the most memorable outback experiences I have. I'd do it again in a heartbeat.

The local landowners are based in Wingelina. They can get a little cranky if they spring you in there uninvited. Yes, they will charge some dollars to go to the tri state border area.

People think the WA/NT and WA/SA border run together in a continuous straight line from north to south but it doesn't. There is a little indentation which travels east from the bottom of the WA/NT border and the it turns south at the commencement of the WA/SA border.

There are actually 3 different markers for the tri-state. If you look closely you will find the original wooden peg marker about 200m southwest of the metal plaque (of which there are 2).

You can get supplies and fuel and cash at the Wingelina store 7 days a week, just might be closed for a few hours each day.

Forgot to mention: You can drive down the track from Docker River through to Wingelina though it's rough in places. Definitely no good if it's been recently rained on. It is sometimes in better nick than the Warakurna (Giles) to Wingelina Rd (Gunbarrell Hwy Giles Mulga Park Rd). There's been some drilling and exploration in the area of late so you might just jag a graded bit here and there.

The fella that runs the "escorted" tours charges $100 per vehicle and $20 per occupant. He normally drives his own vehicle. I think his name is Lance Peck. If you look at HEMA maps there should be a little comment box near the location that lists the details.

If you come down from Docker and go straight there you're still 30 odd clicks away from the community. There isn't much traffic out there compared to Uluru or the Olgas.

The burning question in 'The West Australian" today is about the State Borders. They mention the WA/SA/NT border and reference http://www.ga.gov.au.
An interesting fact on that site about Surveyors General is:
One interesting piece of trivia is that fewer people have visited this site than have been to the South Pole.

Well I've been there twice by car and flown directly over it in a plane once.

Apart from an info board, a couple of steel plates (there's 2 because a different survey team got a different position for the border), a very old weathered timber survey peg some 200 metres from the steel plates (that indicates a third position for the border), an old windmill and a iron shed there's not much else to see out here except for the occasional camel or scrub trukey.

Just wondering if anyone has an update on requirements to visit Surveyors General corner. We are heading across the Anne Beadell, up the Connie Sue then the Great Central Road to Uluru with a side trip to Surveyors General Corner. All permits have been applied for and permission received with the WA permits provided by the www.dia.wa.gov.au website. The issue is that permission to travel to Surveyors General corner was part of the permit but there are no special conditions on the permit. I have read this thread and other info that suggests you need to take a local along as per photprado's post above but nothing is required according to the permit conditions. Have things changed since last year?
                Any advice would be appreciated.
                Cheers

Thanks Bushbasher. I sought a bit more clarification from the DIA Permits Officer about what we do when we get to Wingellina. Her response was

You go to the office or the store and there will be someone there to take you down.
By the permit they will know of your visit and should have a guide ready for
                      you.
Any further info would be appreciated but at least we have some guidance. We really want to make the trip - should be a great adventure!!!

Advice from my mate at Blackstone: The shop isn't always open and there isn't always someone prepared to travel out to the corner. If you decide to use the guide they will want to go in your car. They don't run a tourist business so aren't too fussed about going out of the way to see you go in the right direction. I've been there 3 times now and never seen another sole within 25km of the place. There's a sheltered info board and a couple of brass plaques - 170m apart (WA border isn't a straight line) and that's it. Road in from Docker is quite reasonable (when dry).

Great info Bushbasher. Really appreciate the update. I assume it is fairly easy to find the markers - the Hema maps seem pretty straight forward.

The main 2 brass plaques are on white steel uprights and about 1.5 metres tall. The wooden marker will test your powers of observation though. Some silly vandals have scratched the plaques as they believe the diagrams depicted show the wrong alignment of the borders.
