  • NSW Chichester State Forest

Here is a list of some of the best tracks in the area. I have not been up there for sometime so not sure of track conditions. Some of these trails can be difficult for standard cars. These maps are helpful
    Maps Chichester 9233-4s scale 1:25000
    Craven 9233-1s scale 1:25000

Wilson spur track. -32.152616, 151.833072. Travel along this trail approx 1 km then turn left onto Pine spur trail. There is a rutted sometimes tricky decent down into the creek. Not marked on the map is a trail just before you cross the creek to the north. This is a challenging rutted high climb that takes you to the Upper Avon Rd. Turn left and follow the trail keeping left until the road crosses the Pine spur trail.

Wilson spur track. -32.152616, 151.833072. Opposite the Pine Spur trail is a very steep rutted long hill climb that will take you to berrico road. The trail splits into 2 at the beginning of the high climb with the trail to the south being the more difficult but can be a little tight between trees however the trails soon join. Not really any turning around room so a winch is handy.

Side track on Mountain Road. -32.190831, 151.787839. This trail is in between mountain road and corner creek on the map. You may be coming from the north but co ordinates are for the south as it more fun to climb the hills. Unlike most of the other trails this is quite a rocky climb. About 12 months ago they had just started logging on the northern end so I hope they have not logged the whole track, as it is one of the best climbs. Mountain Rd itself is easy but enjoyable drive and the only one marked as 4wd only.

Black Bulga Range -32.22707, 151.798911. This comes off cabbage tree road just before you cross the Telegherry River. (Cabbage tree road continues across the river but shortly after there is a locked gate). This is another long very steep climb. There is not point to turn around and about half way up this is a tree across the track but you can get around it. Good Climb.

Unknown Off Cabbage tree Rd -32.232914, 151.791358. Although on the map it shows this as a dead end trail it is a through road. At the beginning there is a bridge, which is only good for bikes now however there is a trail, which climbs down and through the creek. There is also a good swimming hole in the Telegherry River here. Follow the trail along the side of the river and it will turn across the river and there is a hill good climb which leads to Dixie Top Road.

Unknown off Frying Pan Rd -32.220462, 151.760931. Just south of Frying Pan camping area is this trail, which is not completely marked on the map but leads to Reeves Rd -32.23767,151.750717. A Very rutted step climb. May need lockers.

As off Frying pan is another trail which connects with the end of Reeves road though a bit easier but still a good climb. 32.232334, 151.763484

Bush Mills Rd -32.213854, 151.721964. This entry is the southern end as the northern end is locked and the two ends don’t meet. Follow this trail until you cross the Telegherry River. Once across the trail will turn left and then there is another good hill climb. At some point up the hill you will have to turn sharply to the left as which is no trouble as the old track is over grown. It will lead you to middle ridge road.
However at approx 32.185928, 151.725054 there will be a old logging clearing to the left ( when heading north). Though not marked on your map at the back of this clearing is trail that leads back to Wangat Rd. Good Climb.

I've been to Chichester (Telegherry River) a fair bit, but haven't seen those tracks. Is that from the Allyn River side?

                  Re: NSW Chichester State Forest

Someone has posted the tracks listed above and a couple more on the 4x4 earth website which gives a more accurate indication of where they are as I never used a gps when exploring up there.
We came across a couple of fallen trees on some tracks when I was up there with blusuz also. They where movable but to much work for just us.
Unfortunately there is a bit of a problem in some places with lantana. Probably due to lack of use.

                    Re: NSW Chichester State Forest

Yeah, I've found about 50% of the tracks are getting a bit too overgrown for 4x4ing, but in some cases you just need a chainsaw to get a little further in, and it can be worth it.

One example: Bush Mill Rd, between Wangat Rd and Middle Ridge Rd:
                    http://www.4x4earth.com.au/tracks.html? ... -mills-Rd-

                    - It's too easy and overgrown on the west side of the valley (Wangat Rd). I could reccommend better ways down which may have a fallen tree or two, but much less scrub and lantana.
                    http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a246/ ... mpPANA.jpg

                    - The creek crossing is nice - quite small, but the rocks are big enough to make it interesting.

                    - On the east side there's a short flat and mud hole, so a second vehicle or winch is reccommended in wet conditions.

                    - The way back up on the east side is by far the best bit. See first half of vid...

I love this area, spent a bit of time at Wangat Lodge and plenty of bush walks (some 5+ hours).
I'd be keen for Hunter GTG up that way one weekend or t'other.....

There is a trail on the west side that is probably steeper. After crossing the river follow the trail and on your right there will be and old logged clearing and behind that is a trail that goes straight up the hill. You do need some clearence to make it though.

Lol, I do remember a slight clearing on the west side, not sure if it's the same one... I went a couple hundred metres up the trail before I gave up due to relentless overgrowth.

I don't think that is it. At the back of the clearing the trail went vertially straight up from memory and as I said it's very steep. I have only been down this track once about 18months ago and I was a passenger in a patrol and we did not try to drive back up as we were on a recce just exploring.
It looks like it has been marked on the 4x4 earthy link. It is a bit of a mess but if you follow the track with the green markers I think that is it.
On and old edition of the topo map it is marked on there. The new edition does not show the entire track.
