Gladstone (QLD) to Birdsville??

Hi All
We're heading out to the Birdsville Races from Gladstone via Longreach late August. We are on a bit of a tight schedule to get there but will be taking our time to get back home. Any tips would be appreciated on things to look out for/Places to see/Tyre pressures/Road conditions/Anything in general.
I know they have had some rain again in the past couple of weeks and some of the roads are under water again but hopefully there wont be too much more rain and things will dry out a bit.
