  • Question: Condamine 14 River Crossing - Single Vehicle?

    G'day everyone,

In the next few months I hoping to get out and explore the Condamine 14 River Crossing track. I appreciate it is good practice to do these tracks with another vehicle but is the Condamine River track reasonably easy? Is a second vehicle really necessary? Are there plenty of vehicles on the track anyway if there is a problem?

I'm pretty sure I drove this track many years ago in a Suzuki Sierra (but not quite sure if it was actually this track though) and handled in no worries.

    Comments and advice are welcome.

    Cheers,

    Skip

Skip unless we have had heaps of rain you could almost do it in a normal sedan, the time we did it the deepest crossing was under the sidestep and no we never locked the centre diff or got into 4lo. Other than the crossings the rest is just dirt road.
Get out there, get into it.

As Hutch said... easy track unless there's been rain.

Here's a trip we did a while ago.

In addition to the level of the crossings, the rain also affects the road which can get quite greasy and muddy in places.

have done it solo a few times and as the guys above have said, unless there's been recent rain it's dead easy. if it's been belting down the few days before then different story, I've heard of water of the bonnet depth.

keep us posted if you're planning on heading down. I'm keen to get out for a run before the GTG and this was at the top of the preferences for destinations!

The run itself is a bit of fun but is over all too soon. Getting there can make the day a good day out. Try going South from Boonah via the Head and Spring Creek Road - very nice drive. Google Earth has had one of those camera cars do this trip so you can get on there and see the roads they took, search Google Earth for Killarney, qld and follow back from there. The Head is so named I believe as it is the head of the Condamine (which is the start of the whole Murray Darling system), so be careful where you go if you need to pee, otherwise our friends in South Aust have to drink it   .

It's where I took mine for its (and my) first off road run.

This is typical of the river crossings as long as it hasn't rained for a while.

Looks good, I am going to have to do this sooner rather then later, nice photo and off to the side looks like a good spot to take the wife, dog and I for a picnic one Sunday.

Definitely. My young wipper snapper had a great time playing in the water at one of the crossings last time i went through. Was the highlight of the trip for him!

Jump onto White Swamp road too if you like mate. Some beautiful views and you also duck down over the border.

To answer the OP's question about difficulty, I've done the track in my VS Calais, and in the VN Commodore I had before it. There is a place in there with cabins that is a great spot to stay if you want to get away from it all, but still have a comfortable bed. Last time we went there, it pelted down rain during the night and the river came up a bit, so leaving the next day in the Calais was a little hairy in places, but was still doable.

If it can be done in a low clearance, long wheel-base 2WD, you should have no troubles in a Prado. I've only been the proud owner of a Prado for a bit over a week and itching to get it dirty, that might be a good area to start.
