  • MT HART PROBLEMS FOR TAFFY ABBOTTS

Any one who has done the Gibb River Rd and stayed at Mt Hart might have met Taffy Abbotts, a real Aussie character who built the place up with his own labour over the last 20 years. Now he is about to have it all taken from him by the WA Dept of Enviroment and Conservation, This would be an outrage. I urge you to have a look at his story on http://www.gibbriverroad.net/mount-hart.html and make up your own minds. I don't know if this is the right forum to bring this up, but if the word spreads something might happen.

Been there a couple of times and they let us camp right out the back of the place. Magnificent country. DEC shooters were destroying all the cattle that had been left after the final muster. That was about July 2004.

DEC have done this right across the state to many former cattle and sheep stations. Access is still permitted and occassionally camping fees apply. I guess it's all in the name of restoring and protecting native species.

Re: MT HART PROBLEMS FOR TAFFY ABBOTTS

We were at Mt Hart in May/June 2010, great place. The dinner in the restaurant was more than a meal, it was an event! Apparently due to an avalanche of support for Taffy and Kim (his lady and business partner), DEC have now decided to "negotiate". Quite what that means remains to be seen, but it shows the power of the Internet, doesn't it? Most of that support would have been generated via the www.gibbriverroad.net website I suspect. Let's hope an equitable solution is arrived at - given the amount of money (his own money) and sweat that Taffy has put into the place over the last 20 years, you could almost say that Mt Hart IS Taffy, and/or Taffy IS Mt Hart. It would be massively unfair if it was taken from him.

Somebody has to pay the 100 odd billion dollars to keep all the people on welfare happy. You got a better idea?
