First Aid Training

I have just renewed my Senior First Aid certificate and have been looking at the Remote Area First Aid Training offered by St John. They recommend this course for 4WD enthusiasts. Has anyone done this course and if so was it worth it?

Yes it is worthwhile, check it has the HLTFA302A - Provide First Aid in Remote Situation standard.

The basis is to provide stabilisation of patient for longer durations. Depending on who runs the course is whether they cover air extraction techniques, runway prep, etc ......

If there were a few Pradopoint member to attend, it could be run as a session and you would probably get a discount.

Thanks, I'm in WA and it looks like the only place doing the course is St John - but they are good anyway.

The Red Cross run this course but only in Sydney, not in WA :?: I would have thought that with all the mine sites in WA there would be a lot more call for it here than in Sydney.

Might be worth a call as they often provide SFA for our guys at work and may also do this course.

I finally got around to booking this course with St John (HLTFA302A Provide First Aid in Remote Situation). Going up to Belmont 15/16 September.

The course covers the following:

Planning and preparation
Managing the remote situation
Infection control and hygiene
Observation and documentation
Basic life support
Trauma management
Bites, stings and allergic reaction
Environmental conditions
Casualty movement
Safety and survival
Communication
Rescue and evacuation preparation
Principles of triage and care of the deceased

Should be interesting

I strongly recommend first aid training to everyone, and also to carry a well stocked first aid kit in your 4wd too. Even if you aren't sure how to use it, at least someone else might be.

Totally agree mate, I already have the Senior First Aid qualification (actually a prerequisite for the Remote course) and a very well stocked First Aid Kit.

Just got back from the St John Remote First Aid course and I would definitely recommend it. It was a very intensive two days building on the Senior First Aid course with lots of scenarios to deal with (multiple casualties and remote locations). More information on why you do (or don't do) some of the things you are taught on the Senior First Aid course which was very helpful. I only renewed my Senior First Aid in March and quite a lot has changed since then - especially on the DRSABCD and wound dressing.
