I notice that the 150 series GX is fitted with a 17x6.5 alloy wheel now. Did Toyota ever make a 17x6 alloy rim for the 120 series, or are all 120 series alloys 17x7.5?

Thanks, I have a 120 series Prado brochure that lists the 17x6 wheel but doesn't state whether it's steel or alloy. The same brochure states the track to be 1535mm for the standard 120 with 17x6 rims and 1575mm for the GX, GXL, VX and Grande with 17x7.5 rims. If the offset is ET15 for the 17x6 and ET30 for the 17x7.5 then the figures in the brochure don't make sense. Shouldn't the ET15 wheel give you a wider track?
The 150 series specifications make more sense: 1605mm GX, 1585mm GXL, VX & Kakadu.

Yep, 1575mm is the correct track for a 17x7.5 ET30 as measured on my Grande. That would make the track 1605mm with a 17x6 ET15. Now that makes far more sense and agrees with the 150 series data.

The brochure must be wrong. If you take the GXL track is 1575 then add 60 that gives you 1635 hub face to hub face. The 17 x 6 wheels (definately only steel) are +15 offset so the track is 1635-15-15 = 1605 as per the 150. I checked the 08 brochure and sure enough it states 1535 as track. Wonder what the earlier brochure had listed?
OK answered my own question, found the pdf version... GX and GXL listed, same figures as 08 brochure for std and GX/GXL/...
I checked the Toyota owners manual and on page 324 it states a "Front and Rear tread of 1535 With 225/70R17 tires" and "1575 With 265/65R17 tires".
If this is correct, then the offset of the 17x6 GX/Standard steel rim is actually ET50.
Look.
Just tell me what great looking rims I can fit on my 120 2009 Grande. I like the look of DC2's but they are a no-go.
I admit I cannot read any of the charts, I am tyre size dyslexic and incompetent. Every time I try I feel half pregnant!

I was thinking the same thing, looking at how the centre of the GX steel rim is almost proud of the tyre sidewall. I wonder if Jimmy or anyone else with a GX or Standard with 6" steelies would be able to measure the track from tyre tread centre to tyre tread centre and determine what the actual track is. Or perhaps Toyota could enlighten us with the offset of the 17x6 steel rim.
Looking at this wheel offset calculator, a 6" rim with an offset of ET50 would sit just about flush on the suspension side as a 7.5" rim with an offset of ET30.
The implications for wheel choices for NSW Prado owners becomes limiting if the 7.5" ET30 rims are the widest factory offset available on a 120 series. Current NSW regulations restrict rims to offsets that will not increase track by more than 25mm, which means offset would be restricted to ET30 to ET20 (ET17.5 theoretically speaking). At an offset of ET20, any rim wider than 8" would reduce clearance to the UCA when compared to the standard rim, further restricting rim choice.

I think the law allows you to make modifications according what is on the tyre placard. Perhaps on the GX's tyre placard, it will list both the GX and GXL wheel and tyre spec.

Yes, the GX and Standard can go to the 17x7.5 ET30 but if the the offset allowing the widest track is now ET30 instead of ET15, then the limit for maximum allowable track is 30mm less.
In other words, using NSW regulations: If the widest factory track is 1575mm for the 120series, then the maximum allowable track increase of 25mm makes the maximum track 1600mm for the 120.
The 150 series has a widest factory track of 1605mm, add 25mm maximum track increase and the maximum track for the 150 is 1630mm.
I bet MLC's head has exploded by now.
