Hi, I'm new to this forum and was wondering if I could ask some questions.
I have a 150 GX with the standard 17/6.5 wheels. I'm getting a camper trailer built to my specs and have an opportunity here to match wheels on the camper to my prado.
We are setting up for the big lap.
The tyres I'm currently running are 245/70/R17 and about ready to be replaced. (I was thinking of Cooper AT3's).

I have been told the above tyre size might be difficult to source in the outback if I should need to replace one. i.e I'd be more likely to source a 265/65/R17 tyre.
I have an opportunity to purchase some second hand Prado 120 17/7.5 rims which will accomodate the 265/65/R17 tyre.
Is this a good idea to replace my rims?
I believe the offset from a 120GXL is more positive (+30) than the 150GXL (+25) according to the first post in this thread as follows. Is 5mm something to be concerned about?

    Any thoughts on this welcome.
    Thanks

Steve generally fitting 120 series GXL rims is illegal because the track is narrower. I haven't done the calcs on a GX and the different tyre width. You would be better to get 150 GXL wheels or a legal aftermarket alternative which will br +25 or less. Typically you can increase track by up to +25mm but cannot reduce track at all. This usually refers to the widest track that the manufacturer lists for that vehicle.

You could also have rubbing on the upper control arm as I did when the tyre shop sold me +30 offset aftermarket wheel, they had to be swapped out for a +18 as that was the next choice.

          Thanks Guys,
I think I'll take your advise and go with the 150 GXL rims (17/7.5 ET25)

To be totally honest there isn't the gap there used to be between the GXL etc and GX in the tyre department. 245/70 17s are the same diameter as 265/65 17s. The 20mm width isn't a real issue and there are good tyres available in both sizes. You may be better off sticking with GX wheels. Just a thought.

I went for 275/65 17s for the extra (maximum legal) increase in diameter, not the extra poofteenth of width. You could achieve the same going to 255/70 assuming there are suitable tyres.

hmm. I was concerned about getting a replacement tyre while in some remote location/town and was told that 265/65 R17's might be easier to get. Can I simply fit 265/65 17s to the 17/6.5 GX rim? Any issues with this? I think that would be a good option if that is possible. I had initially thought that you needed the wider rims to accomodate this tyre.

Rim width for a 265 tyre should be 7.5" to 10" so the GX rim isn't ideal. Talk to a couple of tyre places and see what they say about tyre availability. I would be surprised if 265/65 was any easier to get than a 245/70. 275/65 is a popular size with Patrols and 100 series.

Got some Prado rims for my trailer and today I was going to rotate them onto the vehicle (just done 5000kms). Well they both say 17x7 1/2 and under that it has 30 (I assume the offset) on the inside of the rim. However the bore size is bigger by about 4mm and the thickness where the stud holes are is 5mm more on the trailer rims. The first and third photos are the trailer rim (newer rims) and the other two are the ones on my 2009 GXL 120 series.

I cannot use the vehicle rims on the trailer because the studs will be too long and vise versa if I put the trailer rims on the vehicle.

I have two options, sell the newer rims and try and get rims the same as my vehicle or just leave the trailer rims as is and not get the kms out of the tyres...

Are the trailer rims genuine Toyota rims? The photos of the back of the rims are out of focus and I can't make out what the markings read, but if the bore is different I assume they are aftermarket rims. Often trailers need less offset or spacers to give the required clearance, are you sure they are +30 offset? Have you measured the backspace on both rims to verify they are the same offset?

I'm assuming that the units for the backspacing is in inches but then it doesn't makes sense as a 17x8.5" ET6 rim has a backspacing of 4.49", not 5". Maybe it's a typo and rounding off will get 4.5" and someone missed the 4. bit.
Guys I have been doing plenty of research on these wheels and the back spacing is definately 5inch so does this mean it is another 12 odd mm more offset??

                            Hutch,
                            It just dawned on me.

Rim width is measured from inside the bead.
Backspacing is measured from outside the bead to the hub face.

So backspacing is not half the rim width + offset.

                            Backspacing = 0.5 * rim width + bead + offset

They have toyota on the inside on the rim and the caps that came with the rim is also different.

Winston, what does the outside face of the rim look like? Exactly the same? Perhaps the previous owner bore it out to fit another vehicle?
