Re: auto gearbox
The small button on the side of the gear shifter "O/D off" disables 4th gear for towing/engine breaking.
As for the two buttons beside the shifter: ECT PWR changes the shift pattern so the transmission will downshift more aggressively to improve responsiveness. 2nd Start does as the name suggests, Starts in 2nd gear. Mainly for low traction situations (snow/ice/mud).
I normally use 2nd start in low-range unless climbing a steep hill.Declan: 1997 GXL 4.5 Auto 80 series on LPG, ARB bullbar, 2" OME lift, 32" MTZ, GME UHF, rear ARB locker, Kaymar spare wheel carrier

Re: auto gearbox
I don't have a red button, so I don't know what that is. Take a photo?
ECT PWR - I rarely use this, but it'd probably be handy on fast mountain trails (when low range is too low).
2ND START - as williade noted, it's for slippery conditions. Example: You've come down a hill and stopped in the valley, only to realise the ground is so soft it's on the virge of being a mud pit. If you take off, the power of 1st gear will spin the wheels and possibly dig you in. Instead, engage 2ND START - by taking off in second gear with some very soft throttling, you may just creep out of the area without digging. Just remember to use this approach BEFORE you get stuck, as afterwards, it's too late.
O/D button: Overdrive is actually another set of gearing specifically designed to reduce the RPM when crusing at highway speeds. In practice it's like having a "high range" - higher speed, less power. It automatically engages when traveling at high speeds, from around 60 or 70km/h and above. If we did not have overdrive gearing, our 4th gear would generate high RPM at highway speeds. When we disable O/D, the "high range" gears are disabled and you're running a straight 1:1 drive ratio in the 3rd or 4th gear. O/D is enabled by default, and you'd consider disabling it when towing or hauling heavy gear (to provide more consistant power and reduce stress to the engine).glen_ep - engineered, 4" lift, 33" 255/85R16, lockers, 4.88 ratios www.pradopoint.com.au/showthread.php?17237 www.youtube.com/user/glenep www.fb.com/groups/ToyotaPrado90
