      Mardoc,
My apologies for recomending Wicked Campers to you. When you asked for "cheap" I thought you had abandoned the Toyota idea. So staying with a Toyota, have a look at www.boomerangcampers.com . I saw a pair of these (bushcamper 4wd) on the road today and they looked like nice neat vehicles. The company website also indicates they have offices in both Perth and Darwin and their posted prices seemed reasonable.

      Good luck

Re: Best car rental in AU

Having come across "Wicked" vans in the most remote places the average backpacker behind the wheel really has no comprehension of the trouble that they could get into when traversing through our great desert regions. I pulled a 2 wheel drive bongo van out of the middle of Lake Throssell after a trio of Belgians decided to chase and photograph a herd of camels. 6 hours later I got them out with my V8 troopy. They had no spare tyre and were happily on their way to Ayers Rock via the Great Central Road. They had just paid $180 for a second hand tyre at the Chooky roadhouse.

The issue with any of the rentals that Mardoc chooses will be the cost of replacement tyres and the lack of availability along the Canning, Gibb etc. Recovery of broken down vehicles will be in the several thousand dollars should anything go wrong whilst travelling throughout central and northern Australia. The Royal Auto Club (or equivalent) does not frequent these parts.

I've never used them but I've seen them advertised and they look to be good. Would be a company that I would consider if I needed to hire a 4wd.
had a look to Sargent, but if i have understood well (sorry for my unperfect english)they propose long time rental and leasing, plus manteniance, only to the companies.
regarding price: 2000aud for 10 days, seems the medium price requested for a 7series, 10series, completely equipped.
next week, i'll restart searching and up-date you.
            cheers
I think you may have mis-understood their policy, I have met couples who have hired short term.

most of the specialized 4wd rental include on price 2 spare wheels and recovery kit.
perfectly knowing that this could be insufficient traveling alone, it goes to be different when the group has composed of 4/5 equal vehicles with equal tyre's size. ( and this is what we are looking for)
this way, i think at least one problem is just solved.
engine failures and similar couldn't be predicted, so nothing else to do that carry some spare filters, hope in regular mantenance of vehicles and good luck!
Is there , in AU, a chance to get a temporary insurance for vehicle's recovery from remote areas?
I have one for my Prado, that cover North Africa and get back home the cars, if repairing on site is impossible...

The automobile clubs in Aus have a limited coverage but at least there is coverage for roadside assistance. Try RAC WA

Re: Best car rental in AU

                  hi all,
after the check all around WA, the medium price for cars requested is around 200 aud per day per car.
no competition among operators, so we'll try to choose one by best feelings, after decide the track to ride.
                  thanks everybody for infos.
I'll leave for Algeria next saturday...will post some photos when i'll be back.
                  Happy Easter to all!
