  • Trailer wheel size & track width

I notice that there are a lot of Pradopointers out there with camper trailers.

I am in the process of gathering info for the purchase of a CT. There are two things on my CT list that I would like some feedback on:

    1. Must have 17" wheels/tyres that are interchangeable with the Prado.

    2. I would like the CT to have the same track width as the Prado.

From what I have researched so far with CTs, most come std with 15" rims. I have not found any that include 17" wheels/tyres in the options list and not one has referred to a customised width.

I am curious if anyone else has had their CT set up this way. Was it a matter of luck or research that got the track the same as the Prado or was it requested as a special order.

    Cheers - Byrnsie

The search button finds that this topic was covered a number of months ago (maybe a year?).

You should be able to easily upgrade to 17's just make sure the manufacturer allows for the clearance of bigger OD (if larger than the 15's your upgrading from.

      17" trailer tyres

The idea of having matching tyres is not new. It means that if you have 1 spare for the car & one for the trailer you potentially have 2 spares for either unit. However, you may want to consider the following; how many people do you know that havecompletely destroyed 2 tyres between tyre shops or service stations. I had 7 flats along the Gibb River Rd but only one was not repairable on the fly.
You can probably buy 2 standard 15" tyres for the price of 1 17" tyre & they are a lot easier to get hold of in the bush.

Of course, if money is no object, then lots of 17" tyres is the go.

Just ordered my camper trailer yesterday from All Terrain Camper Trailers in Sydney. Optioned with 17" Prado wheels (at a cost of course) but nothing was too hard for Glen and his people.

          Hello Byrnsie,

We have a TrakShak Deluxe CT (for sale as luck may have it) that has 16" Prado GXL rims with Mud Terrain tyres. Track width is very close to the Prado, we've never had any trouble towing the CT as it follows the same track. It was originally set up for a Hilux and now being used by the 90 series Prado. Friends of ours with a 120 series Prado just borrowed the CT to do an outback trip and had no problems either. Hope this has helped a little.

TP I did try a search but obvously not the right words. I put in Camper Trailer and got a zillion and one replies. I then manually searched through General Discussion and found some good threads on CTs but nothing that answered my question. I should have perservered and gone through the 120 series specific threads.

Thanks for the link. That was exactly what I was after.

                Hi All
I just purchased a kimberly camper and they match the track to
the tow car.I didnt put 17' on the trailer but 16' as it has the same rollling
diameter or close enough th the 17' if you got stuck you could at least
fit them on the back wheels of the prado and besides it easier to get 16'
                in bush

Jeez, never thought of that, will the 16's go straight on the rear without taking to the calipers with a grinder?

The 16' will fit the rear only .Its only if your really stuck to do it but
it will get you out of trouble . In my case i had a spare 16' wheel and
tyre from my 90 prado which means i have 3 spares in total to fit some
where on either trailer or car.

Might have to have a serious look at this as I might have come into a set of 16" 90 series steels for squat!

Over a year since my original post and I am STILL looking at camper trailers. Nothing like procrastination! :? Have done the full circle of wanting a softfloor, then hard floor, now back to soft floor.

I need my camper before Christmas (2008! ) so I need to order SOON. Still unsure as to what I should specify with rims and tyres. The CT I am looking at buying comes with 16" Nissan Patrol stud pattern rims and Nexen AT tyres (265 x 70 R16). I understand the Patrol stud pattern is a direct match with the Prado. I still want to keep my options open to be able to upgrade to 17" wheels and tyres so I will have some extra spares for next years Big Trip.

                        http://www.pradopoint.com/viewtopic.php?t=2969

My concern with the Nissan rims is with the wheel offset. Does anyone know what offset the Nissan wheels are. If they are zero or negative I may have a problem with the positive 30 offset Prado wheels rubbing the trailer body.

Are there any other issues to be considered when specifiying 17" Prado size wheels and tyres on a camper trailer. The manufacturer will give me a $468 credit on the Nissan wheels and Nexan tyres if I want to specify something different.

                        Cheers - Byrnsie

My Trak Shak has the Nissan setup with 265/75/16's

The rims will fit on the back of the Prado ... and the front if I grind the calipers (which I don't want to do).

I think the offset is zero ..... as the rims stick out a bit on the Prado ... and the Prado rims sit right in against the trailer body work.

                          Cheers

When I purchased my CT a year ago, I had a Subaru, so got matching 16" wheels on the CT. Since then I have upgraded to the Prado, and got my CT manufacturer to instal 17" wheels (King wheels which I purchased myself - $105 ea). Fortunately. the CT had sufficient clearance to handle the 17" wheels. The extra height of the CT with the new wheels also was not a problem as it had been allowed for in the original design of the CT. The CT is a Clarkes Country Camper.

Hey pradopoint members, This is my first post on prado point so here goes. I actually built my own trailer and added a Billabong soft top which was originally built to match an 80 Series Cruiser but since then have purchased a new 120 prado. I have changed the wheels from 16 inch cruiser to 17 inch prado wheels. I found it very hard to match wheel track as it reduced internal space in the trailer. I actually sourced a manufacturer through our local tyre fitter who makes billet alloy spacers which add the required amount of offset you need. From memory they where about $320 a set. So you can go from, lets say Nissan Patrol to prado rims by adding the offset with these spacers, as long as you have enough height under the guards (which should be no drama). I think I had to add about 43mm to fit prado rims to my unit but they are really worth a look if you want to get prado's to fit. Ihope this makes sence

                              Cheers Jamie
