    Re: Alloy Bullbar

Ok so I knew I had some gumption, what good man wouldn't and I knew their was a few spots missed under the grill, so I whipped downstairs and tested it, Crooza u r partly right it was taking off the greyish oxidisation? But I also had a stain from the last carwash I used and it would not even look like polishing it out.
But if someone has a polish that works on this bar I would love to know.

Try using it with an electric polisher, much easier to do, and you don't break out a sweat.
another product you can try is a heavy cutting compound, once you have all the oxidation off, give the bar a good polish, this will help keep it shiny alot longer.
Also don't let water (especally after an auto carwash) to sit on the vehicle, because the water and wash solutions that they use are actually caustic, otherwise the brushless washes dont work.

I also had the same problem - It seems the flat alloy sections (bar and uprights) are impossible to keep polished. I use a product called 'Dri-wash' alloy polish. It is much better than Autosol or Brite-Shine but took about 1 hour of polishing once a month to get it to a satisfactory shine. PITA. I solved my problem by removing the bullbar, taking it apart and colour coding the bar and uprights the same colour as the vehicle (silver). Worked a treat, now all I have to polish is the tube rails and they are easy and stay shiny for quite some time.
        Just another option for you.

          Re: Alloy Bullbar

I believe there has obviously been a change of material grade use for the genuine Toyota Alloy bars as I have a 2002 90 Series with the genuine alloy bar fitted, yes it is dull (polish a bullbar .. no thanks) after 9 years but it has not discoloured like the 120 series bars seem to.
Perhaps one of the electronic rust prevention devices may assist in retaining that "new car" look.

            Re: Alloy Bullbar

I have similar discolouration on my alloy sidesteps, this is on a 2002 Prado. I've tried washing them but it seems like it's some sort of permanent stain from a previous treatment or wash, it's almost like it has a soapy residue on it all the time. Any ideas on how to clean it off?

As for alloy bullbars, I had a Toyota alloy bar on my 80 series Cruiser and it lost its polish fairly quickly too. I've also had a black painted steel bar on a Maverick (Patrol re-badge) and had to get that re-painted. So far my colour coded ARB steel bar has been fine; will stick with this type in future.

Don't know if it will work but a domestic cleaner recommended mt to use white block or magic block or magic eraser to clean soap scum off shower screens. It's basically melamine foam and comes in a rectangular block. Available in BigW for $9 for a large piece which you chop up. I think it comes under the Doktor Power brand. I use it to clean marks off the walls and it works a treat. Will try it on my shower next.

You just have to remember that it is not a scouring pad. You need to work gently or the stuff just disintegrates.

Do tell if it works or not.
And NEVER use it on the paintwork of your car. It will pick up dirt and the dirt will scratch the paintwork.

                    Re: Alloy Bullbar

I just tape off the plastic and hit the bar with a Mothers powerball and wax. Quick easy work and have to say the bar really looks great. I get the acid spots etc but that is normal when there is no clear coat on.

After I buff I put a coat of DoDo Juice carnuba wax on t protect. Last a long time. You can also place sealant on after a good buff.

I know alot of people don't care to wax their vehicles but I enjoy waxing mine. Almost 3 years old and it outshines one off the showroom floor.

I use Dodo Juice Purple Haze. It is a Carnuba wax and has a phenomenal shine. If I have not waxed or the paint needs a good clean I will use either Meguiars cleaner wax or Mopthers....both are good just keep away from the plastic etc.

DoDo Juice will not stain or leave white residue in the cracks and seams or on the plastic. I have even used it on the plastic on the Bullbar!!

It is not chaep but easy to use and will last a very long time. The worst mistake people make is putting on too thick....wax on very very thin and it comes off easily. Second coat after about 3 hours to build up the gloss. Carnuba does not last forever so reapply at least every 6 weeks. Carnuba is an extremely hard wax so you would be amazed how well it protects against branches scrubbing the side.

I waxed mine a couple weeks ago and had to go to western Sydney through the rain. Next day you could hardly tell I had been on the road and rain, everything just falls off!
