    NEW GENERATION VETERANS

We honour our old veterans, we honour them with pride,
And read of all the horrors they have carried deep inside,
We know they served in Asia or New Guinea’s highland rains,
Vietnam or in Africa where many men were slain.

We know that fateful landing on Gallipoli’s dark shore,
Wherever Aussies fought, we know there are so many more,
But now a new young generation needs our help as well,
They too have been to war and suffer with their private hell.

Though losses are not classed as great, their fears are just the same,
Those electronic hidden bombs, still injure, kill or maim,
They fight against an enemy they find so hard to see,
Who mingle in the market place, then cause much tragedy.

Insurgents in Afghanistan hide in the rough terrain,
Or roaming in Iraq, where, wearing robes they look the same,
The suicide stealth bombers, don’t care who they hurt or kill,
Then, with their own beliefs, they try to break our forces will.

Our fighting Aussie spirit shows on any foreign land,
They’re in the skies, they’re on the sea, or on the desert sand,
Now many are returning with the horrors they still see,
And living with their nightmares, suffering bureaucracy.

I know on ANZAC Day, we all remember with a tear,
But ALL vets, young or old, they need our help throughout the year,
Support and listen to their stories, when they do get told,
Let’s honour our NEW veterans, just like we do our old.

    Why wear a poppy?

"Please wear a Poppy" the lady said
And held one forth, but I shook my head.
Then I stopped and watched to see how she'd fare.
Her face was old and lined with care
But beneath the scars the years had made
There remained a smile that refused to fade.

A boy came whistling down the street
    Bouncing along on carefree feet
His smile was full of joy and fun
"Lady" he called, "May I have one?"
As she pinned it on I heard him say
"Why do we wear a poppy today?"

The lady smiled in her wistful way
And answered "This is Remembrance Day
The poppy there is a symbol for
The gallant men who died in war.
And because they did, you and I are free
That's why we wear a poppy you see.

I had a boy about your size
With golden hair and big blue eyes
He loved to play and jump and shout
Free as a bird he would race about
As years went on he learned and grew
And became a man, as you will too.

He was fine and strong with a boyish smile
But he seemed with us, such a little while
When war broke out he went away.
When he smiled at me and said "Goodbye
I'll be back soon, so please don't cry."

But the war went on and he had to stay
All I could do was wait and pray.
His letters told of the awful fight
I can see it still in my dreams at night
With tanks and guns and cruel barbed wire
And mines and bullets, the bombs and fire.

Till at last the war was won
And that's why we wear a poppy son."
The small boy turned as if to go
Then said "Thanks lady, I'm glad I know
That sure did sound like an awful fight
But your son, did he come home alright?"

A tear rolled down each faded cheek
She shook her head but didn't speak
I slink away, head bowed in shame
And if you were with me, you'd have done the same
For our thanks in giving, is often delayed
Though the freedom was bought, and thousands paid.

And so you see when a Poppy is worn
Let us reflect on the burden borne
By those who gave their very all
When asked to answer their countries call
That we at home in peace may live
Then wear a Poppy, remember and give.

I attended the dawn service on Monday morning with my older two kids as part of the kids scouts group. Great experience and I reckomend all attend. My daughter had been picked as one of the two in the group to place a memorial down during the service. Following the service the local RSL put on breakfast of bangers and mash. Wasn't the breakfast they usually do of hotdogs but went down well.

It's great seeing the younger generation getting involved with ANZAC Day. It's always been an important day to me, being 4th generation military and having had a good friend killed whilst on duty overseas. Lest we forget.

One of the most moving experiences we had was in the Victorian High Country a few years ago when we were at Horseyard Flats 1600 mts in altitude on Anzac Day.

We were on a charity drive camping there the night before and had around 15 4bys and about 30 people.

We were privileged to have a war vet who did a Dawn Service, picture this....

Dawn, -4degrees, fog lying on the ground to about knee height, the traditional reading and then the last post, makes you proud of our heritage, forefathers and to be an Aussie!

These was a big turnout at the Dawn Service at Cleveland in Redland City. I will be "raising a glass" today to honour all the men and women who have served and who are currently serving in our armed forces and encourage all members of the PP community to do the same. Lest we forget.

                    They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old;
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
                    We will remember them.

I marched this morning. It was great to see the amount of people that turn out to show their support for our veterans and current serving members, even in a small town like mine.

Makes me even more proud to wear the uniform and serve the country.

Also, please spare a thought for all those that are currently deployed overseas, fighting for our freedom and safety
