  • Which Fridge Size?

In the market for a fridge/freezer. What size do you have? Is it too big / small.
I see me mainly using it as a freezer for two week trips and as a fridge for weekenders. No kids yet but on the cards for future.
    Prefered Brand?

    Cheers
    Matt

I have the 80L i went the biggest i could fit so i dont constantly have to reload or swap drinks and food out all the time as said before if money was no object i would actually go for 2x 40l so i have dedicated fridge and freezer.

How long is a piece of string? How much beer will you drink on a weekend? How much room do you need for other stuff? Are you likely to do a round OZ trip in 5 years time? How deep are you pockets?

So many variables that what suits one will not suit the other. I see 2 obvious solutions though.

      1. Buy the biggest fridge you can fit and afford, this should do the job!
      2. buy a mid size fridge 40-50ltr and if it ends up being too small get a second fridge, then you can have fridge and freezer!

option 2 was the way i went, 39 litre Autofridge originally, then added 47 litre ARB fridge, Autofridge is now the freezer for long trips. We toured on a couple of occasion for a month with 2 adults and a child with only the 39 litre fridge, bigger would have been better though hence the second fridge.

      Cheers Andrew

We have had a couple of different setups what we have now is 2 x 40L both of which can run as either a fridge or a freezer. We find this gives us all the options we need to support everything from weekends away to extended touring.

I recently bought a 60ltr Engel and used it over the weekend for a five day camping trip with two adults and two young kids. I was very happy with the size of the fridge as it held enough drinks and food for the trip, plus room to spare (TIP: A vacuum food sealer works great for space saving). The fridge takes up nearly half of the rear cargo area but that's not much of a problem if you have a roof rack. A mate of mine has a 40ltr Engel which would be fine for one or two people but you'd be pushing the friendship to support a family for more than a couple of days.

I was tossing up between the Engel and the ARB and liked certain features of both brands, but ended up with the Engel due to its stellar reliability and proven performance. Honestly though, I reckon the ARB would be just as reliable.

I run the 80ltd Waeco. It's a good fridge and serves me well on the longer trips. It sucks power though so your battery set-up would want to be up to it.

If I had my time again I'd get two 40's. Combined they'd use the same if not less power as you're not having to open one all the time.

We have a 40 litre (for two of us ) it's OK but a bit small for anything longer than a weekend camping trip.

But the two smaller ones as mentioned above is a great idea. ( if you can afford it ) gives a lot of flexibility.
And they don't both need to be the same size either - you could have 50/40, 50/30, 40/30, whatever suits.
If going on a day trip, or an overnighter, take one fridge but for a full on extended camp take the two.
And if one packs up you still have some refrigeration.
