16mm rims will foul on the front calipers on a 120, you can get away with it by grinding some of the cast marks of the caliper but thats just as dodgy and i wouldnt go down that road, ive got 70 series on mine and my speedo is spot on at 60 and 100 with my gps,. looks like the only way for you to go is to go and get an engineers cert to run the bigger tyres. cheers samo

You will have to grind your calipers to fit 16" rims on I think. I might be worth investigating an engineer's certificate if you really want muddies.

I wont be grinding the calliopers thats for sure, Rang the NRMA who I am insured with and they said they go by the RTA rules so if I ran bigger tyres and out of there 15mm rolling diameter they would viod my insurance without fail was his words to me today. There must be a shit load of 120's running 70 profile tyres and not technically legal on the road and also risking insurance. Rang engineer this afternoon and one of the things I would have to do is get the speedo calibrated to suit the new bigger tyres, I said well what about when I put the standard rims back on for around town ?? He wasnt sure on that one !!! Will ring a few tomorrow. What a load of crap just to go one size bigger in profile, told the RTA that the bigger tyres would be heaps better due to stronger side walls then the grandtrecks they put on from the factory and a whole heap less likely to puncture at higher speeds and with extra weight then standard tyres. There the set rules sir, up to you wether you follow then or not was the reply...............Regards steveFace lift 150 Prado V6 auto. No mods yet

Steve,
I have been in the same boat as you mate. A real alternative to the 70 series problem is maybe a Mickey Thompson STZ.
http://www.mickeythompsontires.com.a...x.php?page=STZ
They list a 265/65 x 17 inch tyre (all terrain) in a Light Truck sidewall.[CENTER][B][U]Matt

I have 3 sets of Cooper tyres ST, ST/C and STT all 265x70x17. I use the 5xST's on King steel rims for general local trips and day to day commuting. The 6xST/C's on alloys are on the car now as we are heading up to the Cape next week. These are great for long dirt roads and good on tarmac. They also proved themselves in mud last year around Alice, Finke, Mt Dare and in the Simpson. I keep the 5xSTT for the high country or trips through the Flinders. The only drama is the ST's have a few lugs torn off in some places otherwise never had a flat or have let down by any of the Coopers. Great tyre! I have F&R lockers so the lugs suffer more from traversing steep rocky climbs with so much grip rather then a tyre fault.
My speedo on the original 265x65x17's was spot on across all speeds. Now with the larger Coopers it throws out the speedo by 3.5% so it is showing 100kph when I'm actually doing 104kph. My understand with the permitted increase of 15mm relates to the height the tyre raises the vehicle. The 265x65x17 is 776.3mm diameter and the 265x70x17 is 802.8mm. The difference in diameter is 26.5mm which is halved to give a radius difference of 13.25mm (e.g. the fixed point from the hub). So the increased tyre size of just over an 1" (26.5mm) only increased the height by 13.25mm which is under the 15mm requirement.Last edited by wastegate; 12-05-2011, 09:09 AM.Tony

Hi Wil, the RTA states the diameter of the tyre is to be no more then 15mm over the factory standard tyre. You can increase the wheel track by 25mm. This is on the RTA website for NSW haveno idea if its the same for WA. By the way where in Karratha are you working ?? Regards SteveFace lift 150 Prado V6 auto. No mods yet

Hi guys
My 06 D4D speedo was 5km/h out with the standard tyres ex factory & measured against 2 gps units. When I fitted the 265/70 Mickey Thompson ATZ 4 ribs, the speedo is now reading 100 and the gps is on 98km/h so we are all good, oh and the ATZ's come highly recommended, over 85,000k's and still more to go.06 GXL D4D, 6spd, Snorkel, ARB bar, XS900 50w HID lights, 55W HID Headlight upgrades, T/bar, 7" GPS, QStarz data logger, 52L Bushman Fridge, Premier winch, Sandgrabbas, GME TX3440, AE4705 antenna, Scangauge II, Dual Batteries, Aero bars & rack, Drawers, 2" Ironman/Rancho/King lift, Under bonnet compressor, Black ducks, Voltage booster, Rear table, AVE TPMS,

Ditto on ATZ's had them on the car from brand new (150 petrol) and they have been fantastic, only done 25'000 k's but most of these have been touring and off road, drove through this mud and cleared perfectly.Originally posted by Jacto View PostHi guys

Has anyone got an opinion on the Maxxis AT-700 Bravo?
They look ok for a 70% road biased tyre.04 GXL - Red Centa dual battery, Alloy B/bar, BFG AT's, Rhino Rack commercial bars x 3, GME TX3540, TJM roof cage, Outback Ideas recovery points, LHS rear drawer, 2" Dobinsons/Bilstein lift, ARB CKMA12 air compressor, CoilRite airbags, ARB 2.5m awning, MCC Dual Wheel Carrier, Eagle Eye headlights with 55w hid lo beam.

Pretty good tyre they are, have a look at the Maxxis Trepador too, more off road bias but still good on road.Originally posted by Gramps View PostHas anyone got an opinion on the Maxxis AT-700 Bravo?

on my recent trip to the high country, a mate had some Micky T's ATZ on a 100 series cruiser. We noted how far worn they were, as he struggled (used loosley, as in took two attempts at some of the hills
), but they still seemed to work just as good as others with mid life AT tyres.
It was later on when we were discussing what new tyres he might buy that he realised he has had the Micky T's for over 120k......and had done quite a bit of offroad work in that time......as well as lots of highway driving. There was still some tread left, above the tread wear indicators too.
I had only recently purchased some Yokohama GO12, (which am more than happy with), but depending on how far these go, i will definatley be looking at the Micky T's next time.2001 Toyota Prado TX, 3 Litre Auto, Yokohama GO12's, factory bullbar.
Wish List : Snorkel, 2.5 inch lift, cargo barrier, 3/4 roof rack, rear drawer system.......and lots and lots of time away!

I was pretty keen on BFG MTs when I replaced the tyres on my 2009 GXL but the 12 week wait qouted by the local tyre store scared me. I can't wait 12 weeks for a new tyre if I total one.
In the end I went for cooper STT 265/70/17. Speedo is now spot on by GPS and traction off road is brilliant (mud, gravel roads and rock... not much sand yet), it's like a whole new machine off road, but...warning.... Mrs Doofus is really pissed off about the noise HER car now makes on road (remember happy wife = happy life). Cant comment on STT wear, nothing noticeable after 5k, but wouldn't expect to see any, particularly given the price of them.
I have 265/70/17 BFG ATs on my work truck (Patrol wagon). They have been great for puncture resistance and look to be wearing pretty well after 15K but they just don't stack up to the STT in terms of off road traction.
Cheers
John
