  • fire extinguishers [super cheap catalogue] are they right type/size to mount in Prado

In the latest supercheap catalogue, there are 2 x 750g fire extinguishers for $24.99 [or individually for the same price $24.99] I thought this would be a good buy so as to mount 2 in the Prado in different locations for ease of access should the unfortunate happen. i was thinking of either mounting one on each of the steps in second row,, or only one step and elsewhere in the prado.

So I was wondering are these the correct type to have and also right size to mount in the Prado on the step? If not is it because of the type of extinguisher or is it due to its when size compared to what other ppers have used.

    Brochure says:

    1A:10B:E
    Aust standards approved
    mounting bracket included
    environmentally friendly
    guage to indicate internal pressure

Not sure if the 1A:10B:E is enough to say what sort it is. There is a picture of them but bit hard to see anything more with my eyes at this time of night

[AND For those who want a larger one, they have a 2kg for $54.99]

    thanks mick

Mine is a 1KG ABE extinghuser. It's probably on the small side and you would be better off, in the case of an emegency, to have a larger 2KG. I have my 1KG mounted on the step and there is some room to move with it. What you could probably do is go into Super Cheap and borrow an extingusher and do a trial fit of the 2KG on the step. Leave a kid with them if you're got any

know what you mean. i recently went in to buy a <$3 socket to fit the engine cover as i couldnt locate one at home. anyway the dope at supercreep said he would have to get permission from the boss first before he or me could take it outside to try despite my prado being parked directly at the door within a maximum of 4 metres of the counter. it took him longer to track down the boss and have the conversation than it did to walk out/try it for size/ walk back in and hand over the loose change for it. why cant young people just use initiative especially when you think about the actual cost in this case

I believe the most common one that PP members mount onto the step is a 1kg. I have the 1kg 1A:10B:E and got it for $25 from Supercheap a while back.

i thought so. i was just hoping i was wrong as buying 2 at this price would have been a good reason to have them in different locations in the car. looks like it will be just one for me too, thanks mick

            Just remember:

An ABE type extinguisher (ABC type in the USA) contains Ammonium Phosphate, which turns into Phosphoric acid if you get it near water. This corrodes all metals, and wiring...

A BE type extinguisher (BC type in the USA) contains Sodium Bicarbonate, which doesn't corrode anything...

Thanks for highlighting that Rob. Definitely something to look out for. Wonder what the price diff is between ABE & BE...

if you can find a BE that is, I work for a large fire protection company and we dont stock it, we can get it in, but we dont keep it in the workshop.
Also consider the type of fire you may get, wiring fault behind dash would start an A class fire, grass cought around the exhaust would be an A class fire.
Im sure most would be aware of classes of fire but for those that are not; A= ordinary combustibles, B= flamable liquids, C= flamable gases, D= flamable metals, E= safe around electricity, F= cooking oils & fats
Also be aware of the extinguishers ratings, using the example of 1A:10B:E as stated above, the number indicates the size of a fire the extinguisher will extinguish, 1 of course being the smallest. Most 1kg powder extinguishers will be rated 1A:20B:E, meaning for an extra 250g they are twice as usfull on a fuel fire.

As for the original question, I would spend a little more and get a larger extinguisher, if you ever need it the cost will be the last thing on your mind.

I've said this before, but even knowing that its corrosive & the efectiveness of smaller extinguishers, I still have 2x 1.5kg A:B:E extinguishers bolted to my cargo barrier. I wouldn't go any smaller and if you can find space to go larger, you pack alot better than I do.

Have done a few courses on basic fire fighting.
Most instructors are of the same opinion.
The best way to put out a fire with 1kg Fire extinguishers is to throw the bloody thing at the fire and hope for the best.
                    The bigger the better.

Home Hardware has them for $38 (1Kg). Definitely go the biggest that will fit in the car. A 1Kg extinguisher lasts about 15 seconds. You really have to aim straight to make the most of this limited spray!

What is best is either the AFFF type: ($305)

                      or the FE36 Halon-replacement type: ($850)

                      (if you've got the money...)
