  • UHF Antenna

As per my thread in the 120 bull bar recall saga, a big dealer with a far nothern hemisphere name , in southern Sydney stuffed the wiring to the bull bar lights and the antenna. To cut a long story short when it was pointed out that they had the antenna lead hanging down under the bull bar and had better fix it pronto they "did" so by pulling the wire out of the GME AE4012k2 base [the one with a spring on the bottom with the antenna attaching about 20cm up]. They then allegedly reattached it....BUT this weekend for the first time since then I needed to put he antenna on and use the radio.Guess what? it didn't work! I disassembled the whole shebang and put the wire in properly and it is now working. The question is: should the central wire on the cable be soldered to anything or is it just a press fit? It doesn't look like it was soldered anywhere though the said dills said they did this. Neil

Yes the centre wire is normally soldered, take the ariel whip off and drill a small hole through the centre of the male thread that the whip attaches to, make sure you cut the plastic inner down from the centre wire and fold the mesh wires back so they dont touch the centre wire, then feed the coax through the ariel and out the hole in the top, solder the centre wire to the thread, re attach the whip. Job done.

    Cheers Andrew
