We tried one of the small 12v electric/ceramic heaters in a camper trailer .... not very effective. Our just sits inthe garage collecting dust.
Would possibly need to use a gas one that you only put on while you require it and are there to watch then put it outside... the tent will not retain the heat for that long either.

How much static would this take, seriously?

BTW - I thought you'd have more chance of creating 'static electricity' from other indoor activities.

Many people don't use sleeping bags properly. They tend to over-dress rendering that $300 down fill bag useless. Wear less clothing. I usually sleep in just my jocks and maybe a T-shirt just in case I have to duck outside for my routine 2.30am piddle. I use a good sleeping bag (no, not the missus next to me) rated to -10. If it's really cold I'll wrap the bag in a bivvy type cover and I usually cook in that, even when it's down to -5 or so. Warmer weather I'll use the bag as a doona type cover only. A wee port or two before bed also helps warm the innards.

When you add dry air, synthetic blankets and movement by a number of people, quite a bit can be created.

For extra warmth i actually throw the swag in the tent as the canvass gives you a bit more insulation, i also do a water bottle at the end of the night before bed and chuck it down by my feet as i find warm feet equals warm body

As for the change can you put bub in a 2 piece then you only have to take the pants off keeping the chest warm for a 10 min change i think you would be OK. Ive personally spent the night in the same area at -8 and as said above i have used a good sleeping bag in the swag a good tent with a thick fly and slept in that with a hot water bottle beanie and nothing else ( i hate pj's) and was quite comfortable

Bear Grills would pee into his bottle, cuddle it for warmth until it got cold, and then drink it to maintain hydration.

Chuck Norris would just pee on Bear Grills and set him on fire.

When I go out in my camper trailer by myself (ie no missus) I pee into a plastic bottle rather than have to crawl out of bed, open the main flap, open the flywire, open the annexe flywire, stumble across to my designated watering hole, etc. Thought I would share that with you all.

We've taken our kids camping in winter heaps when they were younger, when it got really cold, we had a double sleeping bag and put the baby in between us, not the most comfortable but solved the problem.

We bought one of these a couple of years back ... best thing we ever bought. Runs on those little 200g butane cans ... runs full about 2 hours at full noise and heats our Tambo Cooper XT perfectly. Has all the safety features that shuts them off if they get knocked over. A bit $$$ .. around $170-$200 ... but worth it. Mates have bought similar, but this is definitely the best.

isn't there a serious health risk with using an unflued gas heater in a camper?

Yes, there is a serious health risk and potentially a death risk:

There are several things you can do to avoid or reduce your
exposure to pollutants from unflued gas heaters:
                                • The room needs to be well ventilated. Keep internal doors
and at least one window open to allow fresh air to enter
the room. Check that room vents are not blocked.
                                • Never use an unflued gas heater in the room where you sleep, in a bathroom, caravan or tent.
                                • Minimise the length of time you use an unflued gas heater.
                                • Make sure your heater is installed by a licensed gas fitter.
                                • Read and follow manufacturer’s instructions for using your
                                heater.
                                • Have your unflued gas heater serviced by a qualified
person at least once a year. Heaters that are not in good
working order can release higher amounts of pollutants
into the air. Do not do any maintenance on an unflued gas
                                heater yourself.
I would suggest that includes campers too.
