Depends how old the model is if the radio is about 1 -2 years old its probably upgradeable for a fee.

If its any older then purchasing a new one is the only option, uniden i've heard very little of from either work or contacts within the industry

Here's a page that better describes the GME Range that's upgradeable (not sure if you buggered up the link?)

            http://www.gme.net.au/news/2011/05/3...nstructions/32

Says a heap more than you quoted as upgradeable, the good thing being a lot is able to be done by the user. Will have to check my TX4400 to see if it's made after the right date (thinking not!)

I have the Tx3440 tucked up under behind the steering column. I would hate for them to have to remove the panel to 'upgrade' as it looks as though Im one of the unlucky ones that has to take the unit in. Would it be a software upgrade via the RJ45 connector or is it a hardware upgrade?

At least the upgrade is FREE!!!

EDIT: From the website: All models with serial number prefix’s 011 (November 2010) or earlier as well as TX4400 and TX4600
models with serial number prefix’s 101 (January 2011) or earlier are unfortunately not able to be
upgraded to 80 channel narrow band operation. From serial number 106xxxxxx onwards, all the
above models will be factory enabled for 80 channel operation.

Looks like mine might not be so upgradeable afterall...

Provided your serial number fits the range of upgradable units.

ok so i have read as much as i could of the recommended info and web sites on this and my question is:

why do I or should i worry about buying a new UHF if my UHF is not able to be upgrade other than to have more channels to play with??

here in sydney i rarely have it on as there are too many d...heads on there. so i only use it on rare trips away

am i missing out on something or is all ok to leave it until it dies?

                        cheers all

                          You sound spot on, PradOz.
I will be keeping my old Uniden 400SX-RM. Its still working well. I'll keep it till it fails or I change my car.
The new standard seems to accomodate the old 40 channels, so I will just have to live with that.
