    I have been thinking about getting some Nutserts (Rivnuts) and a Nutsert gun for some projects I have in mind. Just wondering if anyone has any first hand experience with the Nutsert guns, had a look on Ebay and found a few like this http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI....m=120737523853

    My experience with pop rivetts leads me to think that this would be very difficult to use for the larger sizes, especially steel nutserts. I enlisted the help of fellow PPer AMTS and he found this http://www.dafra.com.au/
    A few option there, more expensive, but a cheap tool that doesn’t do the job isnt a cheap tool at all.

    But if I really wanted to go cheap there is always this option, home made rivnut tool.

    Would be interested to know if anyone has used any of these tools and if so what they thought of them.

    I have a kit you can borrow if you like, try before you buy. Without going ouside to look I think it's M5, M6, M8 and M10.

      Boeing have been using them for years and they are great, just remember not to exceed the torque on the fastner as it will make the rivnut spin. As for the tools, well you get what you pay for, cheers Nick.

        It was a long time ago when I used this tool, but it was great and handy tool to have especially when you couldn't easily access the area behind. The nutserts always held well and were strong - the tool I had was your first link (at Ebay). The most important thing (from memory) was to make sure you selected the right drill bit for the nutsert - it made all the difference to the strength of the hold. I have been doing a bit of work around the engine bay the last few weeks and often thought it would be handy to have one of those bad boys again. The DNH780 for $90 looks okay but the $200 jobby gives you a huge range to choose from. All the best.

            Coventry fasteners sell a similar kit. thats where i got both mine from. we use them heaps on the racecars. excellent investment..

              Mine looks much the same as D4D's except it's blue. Textron Fastening Systems brand. I think it came from Coventry Fastners but maybe it was Universal Fastners. I think it's either English or Australian (yeah shock) made.

                Maybe not cost effective for home handy man, but Avdel have been around for years and still a fantastic product, particularly for in sheet metal, industrial, automotive & mining. The applicator tools are either hand or air actuated.
                I think they may have invented nutserts.

                Remember using them to secure large mirrors on DEC fire trucks, Front End Loaders, Graders etc. Diesel Machinery working in bush and often idling for long periods causing original threaded inserts to work loose.

                  So I gather that those hand riveters are good enough for pulling up M6 and M8 nutserts then. My local engineering supplier quoted me $1150 dollars for a U-beaut rivnut tool, nearly died with my legs in the air!

                  Thanks for the offer Mick, if you are coming to Loxton or I am in Adelaide before I get something I wouldn't mind taking you up on that offer, just a couple of nutserts to see how it goes and how easy it is. I have a couple of small jobs at the moment and a couple more on the cards soon. I have a major project in mind in about a years time that may require a few hundred of these so don't want to get anything that will be too hard to use for heaps.

                  I must say I did like the cordless drill attachment in the second link, That might just be the "Tim the Toolman" coming out in me though.

                    Used nutserts on the submarines for varying installs, very handy for use where rear access is restricted or taping a thread is impossible.
                    Absolute pain in the butt if they aren't put in correctly or someone crossthreads one! Once they start spinning, good luck...

                    Might be looking into one of these tools, though, thanks for the pointers - never know when it will come in handy!!!

                      They worked a treat for me on my race-car. It was in fibreglass, and in alloy. Ones in Alloy were less prone to spinning, but as mentioned earlier re torque, don't pull a face when doing them up, and they will last forever

                        Hey all, Rivnuts/nutserts are a something I've never heard of before,from what i've read here would I be correct in saying that they are like a standard rivet that leaves you with a threaded 'hole' to bolt and unbolt to??

                          I say if you had a lot to do the the drill attachment is the go as putting them in gets boring pretty quick. I'm sure you could knock something up yourself to do the job in a decent cordless drill.
