  • Install Cruise Control as add-on accessory

    Gentlemen,

Hi to all and its the first time am visting this site and happy to see that there is a place dedicated for Prado owners.

I just bought a used 2009 VX Prado A/T without cruise control. I am very much interested to know if it is possible to get a Cruise Control installed in it. It really would help on the high way. I saw many cruise control kits on the internet but does Toyota install it for you as an optional accessory for a fee. It will be more trust worthy if they install it so that it would be almost like a factory built cruise control.

    Kindly advise me.

    Thanks a lot.
    Shabeer

Does the VX come without cruise control? I would have thought that would be a standard feature on that model... ? Mind you, i've not been in one before either...

    Edit: Whats your location?

I guess at that time they had VX1, VX2 and VX3 as variants of VX model and only top model had Cruise Control. Mine is VX1 and has bluetooth and 6 CD Changer but no cruise control feature. In the display dash board there is LED for it and hence am guessing it is there but installed only for VX3. I work in Saudi. Kindly suggest if I can get it installed as an add-on feature.

            Hey Hisham,

Thanks a lot for the reply. I am glad that at least it can be done and has been done by some already. I checked with Toyota dealer here and though they know it can be done they didn't want to do it. They said it comes factory fitted and cannot be done. It would have been really great if I can find a thread on it or if some one who has done it respond to me. Btw I found this link in a Do-it-Yourself site and found it simple but needs attention, however it is for Toyota Tundra and am guessing it should be similar to Prado also. May be we can buy OEM toyota cruise kit and install it as per below link.

http://www.toyotanation.com/forum/t171992.html. Please let me know your suggestions.

Anyone who has done or can find those old threads please let me know. Thanks a ton.

exactly as the link said you will need the cruise control switch + cruise control wire
you can get the part numbers for your car from http://www.toyodiy.com

but i was told by an unathorized toyota service cnter that they can fit it and they supply the above + air bag wire , but i couldn't confirm the necacity of changing the airbag wire ,

Perfect, I will try to figure out the part numbers and then will check with any unauthorized service centers if they can do it. Or else will do try a DIY method.
Even am not sure why the Airbag wire has to be changed. I guess we need only the cruise control stack which has the cruise control switch + other controller and we need the wire or the connector and then only two screws which we can get easily from a hardware store.

First thing first is to find the exact part numbers for the model of my car. I might bother you in case I need some help in finding part numbers on the site.

after reading & rereading the post in the link you sent http://http://www.toyotanation.com/forum/t171992.html he also changed the airbag (wire ) Spiral , i'm getting to think that they change the spiral because the cruise control wire will be conected to it , so you will need cruise control switch/stalk, cruise control wire , aribag spiral,2 small screws and steering wheel cover ( where the stalk will be installed) or you can just drill a hole in the existing one , but i would prefer geeting a new one.

I actually did not understand the airbag spiral part and what exactly does that mean. As per the link it says remove the earth wire of airbag connected to the connector and replace it with the cruise control wire. the connector earlier had the earth for air bag connected will be connected to cruise control stalk and that is it is what that the link says. Any clue on the part number for airbag spiral just in case needed or if you can clarify what it is and why is it needed. Also like you said I won't prefer drilling a hole on steering wheel cover and would prefer to buy a new one. Also there is a small part on the side where the cruise stick will pop out and that can be easily removed but that is big almost square shaped piece and preferred one would be a one with circular shaped cut.

I am also unable to remove the steering wheel cover and couldn't find exact details on net to remove it for prado. Any clue on how to get it removed.

Hey I went to Toyota to order the spares and they had cruise switch but not the wire (84633-34010). It looks like they have one piece in Jeddah and I have ordered. Hopefully I will get it tomorrow. I picked up the cruise switch (84632-34011) and the 2 screws (90159-50199). I will update if I get the cruise wire (84633-34010) tomorrow. Also now am bit confused about the airbag spiral which you have mentioned and is wondering if I should order it as well but not sure how to connect it. Any thoughts.

I got the cruise wire also today. However I put a thread to understand how to remove the steering column and many members are warning me not to remove steering cover as its risky being airbag in it and is prone to explode. Even a member who is a mechanic says he doesn't touch it. Now am a little worried on how to get it installed.

Hey Guys, I did it. I did it in 30 minutes and it works like a dream. I am so happy. So all you need is the cruise control stalk, cruise wire and two screws and hex screw driver and normal star screw driver and job is done.
But be very very careful with airbag as it could be a killer. I was extra extra cautious because of the warning given by some good hearted gentlemen in this forum. Thanks to all for the support. I have the Cruise Control feature now on my Prado VX 2009.
