  • Buying Tyres from the USA...

Has anyone tried importing tyres from the USA?
I'm seriously looking at it with the strength of the Oz dollar at the mo.

Plus the USA seem to be able to get the BFG AT's in 275/70/R17. I've seen them as low as US $208 plus shipping.

I will need tyres soon and have been looking at importing from the USA as well. Tirerack quoted approx $350'ish (4 tyres) for shipping and another place was $1000
Just remember that if the cost of the tyres AND shipping exceeds $1000 customs will hit you up for duty tax and gst.
Might just have to order 3 tyres one week and 2 tyres the next

But you are right about a way to get BFG's. I'm also waiting for replies on MT ATZ's and STZ's as well
We'll see how we go. If you don't ask... you don't know

I to am looking at these. I got a quote from our local dealer for 4 x Perilli Scorpian 265/65/17's for $325 each = $1300. From Tirerack they are $772 + freight. I realise that they then have to be fitted (probably $30 - $40 per tyre ) Total = $893. Has anyone got any idea on the feeight charges?

Freight varies unexplainably...I shipped a whole Cosworth motor in a crate to Aus from the USA for $500, but then paid $287 for an exhaust (20kg) for my motorbike.

Also a point to note although it's probably not such an issue with 4x4 tyres is the tyres from places like th e tyre rack etc are usually old and made from non-Japanese rubber.

In the performance world this basically makes them useless but in 4x4 world the hardening etc may be of little concern.

Also a point o note about 'split orders' is that customs electronically record what is comming in to you from where and will match split orders over a three month period. Hence you may, although I've never seen it occur, get pinged for avoiding the gst (no import duty from USA now after the free trade agreement went through over a year ago). It's tax evasion under Federal Law and probably not worth trying to work around for the $50-80 dollars.

Thanks for the heads up. I'm not sure but i think it could be falling into the too hard basket

Not tyres but I have imported 2 sets of wheels, painless, quick and damn easy.

Had the wheels inside of 7 days and at 1/3 the price delivered. I also looked at tyres however the frieght charges start to jump dramatically, certainly have to look at the seafreight option which then you have to pay clearance charges and likely GST as well as doing the running around yourself etc especially as no courier companies use seafreight and the likes of FEDEX and UPS are so very efficient and deliver to your door. I bought an alternator from the states this week, it was picked up tuesday afternoon our time and was delivered 930 on thursday morning.

In the end I did steer away from the tyres and went wheels only as the savings were diluted quite a bit with the extra time and costs associated with seafreight due to the larger cubic volume.

Dont stress too much with the $1000 limit, quite a few shippers in the states will assist you with getting the shipped value under $1000 if its not far off.

Kondo. What kind of coin were the freight charges for the shipping of the Wheels? Did you get both sets sent over in the one shipment or did you get these shipped separately to keep under the $1K?

I looked into importing tyres but have put it into the too hard basket. I was quoted $475 for freight for 4 tyres delivered by sea, door to port. I worked out you could get them slightly cheaper but only just and then you have no warranty or support. I just ordered today a set of 265/70/17 Mickey Thompson 4ribs for $350 a tire locally, get them fitted next week.

In my case I am looking at wheels which the options are far and few between locally. One style I found that was ok was $275 ea over here and a more preferred style online was US $150 ea. The US $600 + freight "hopefully" should keep me under the $1K mark therefore not attracting any Duty + GST. Well worth it from the look of it in this case anyway.
