Welcome Mark. Toyota are still selling 10 Prado's for every 1 Everest, so I don't think it is the success Ford hoped for. I had my last Prado for 9 years and just bought a 2.8 VX Auto for the next 10 years. The old one NEVER let us down, could drive Melbourne to Brisbane or cross the Simpson on a single tank of fuel and there are Toyota outlets and spares everywhere. The range of accessories for the Prado is also great, but the Everest will get more over time. I have a contact at the top of Toyota/Lexus service and he's not aware of any issues with the 2.8. Given the common use of the engine across the Hilux and many other models globally, I think any issues will be found by others first and Toyota are not too bad at fixing things even out of warranty.

Can anyone recommend a reason to choose the everest over the prado,

You're a Ford's forever man and would not drive anything else but you can't afford an F250. That would have to be the only reason.

Out of interest, how have owners found auto prados as a highway vehicle not as a tow vehicle.
I keep reading about overtaking in a prado being a slow process and I accept that the handling will not be same as a car or SUV but interested to know what owners think of their prados as all-round daily drivers as that is what ours will be.

I have just done 15,000km total in a new 2.8gx diesel auto Prado, and its fine. I have added quite a few accessories now, bull bar, winch, tow bar, underbody guards, side steps, custom draws/fridge slide, roof platform, and its not a zippy as it used to be of course, but its fine on the highway.

No 4wd will handle like a car. After market suspension certainly stops the wallowing around. The diesel Prado doesn't have that petrol get up n go but get the job done. Realistically unless you were over taking a road train I think the diesel Prado will do the job. I personally like petrol for that more zippier performance but you will also pay for it at the pump. I'm currently selling my petrol 120 but next one will be petrol again... Every one to their own. My mate just went from petrol to the 2.8 D4D and while he likes it he says he misses the punch of the V6. Cheers

Hi All,

Long time lurker, first time poster!

I have just purchased a 2016 GXL TD-Auto. Previous rig was a 2004 GXL V6 120. After intitially thinking that I would keep the new car stock, I have done the following:
- Bilstein / Dobinson 2" lift, with airbag assist (thanks Zordo)
- Dual Battery
- Redarc tow pro elite Brake Controller

I'm looking for an onboard compressor and thinking about an ARB bar.

Anyway, this place is a great to get ideas and see what other people are doing.

Hi. Just purchased new Prado 150 GX Diesel Auto, Silver, April 16 build for $54,790 (with usual mats and full tank).
Visit ARB next week for a number of extras: bullbar, kaymar rear bar and carriers, snorkel, battery tray, suspension; then Drifta for drawers, fridge slide & water tank.
Have been a long time 80 series owner: 1hz manual diesel, standard model with 6 seats, manual hubs, barn door, vinyl floor, no electric anything! Sure is change to a new Prado: new engine feels good already before being run-in (that sales dude said was not required - shesh!!??); got to get used to all the buttons.

1 week of owning the Prado and I must admit it the most comfortable and practical car I have ever owned. Should have got one years ago.
On the first tank of fuel and it will probably do around 1000km on the tank, mostly outer urban running around.
Hopefully this will improve with time.
Other downsides, Toyota Link seems like a waste of time, overtaking takes planning but it cruises at 110km very nicely. Doing a 3000km trip next week so should be interesting to see how it goes.

Prado Convert

I have recently bought a 2010 GXL and am loving it! The previous owner did a great job of building it up for offroad. The Prado has:
TJM Bullbar with LED fog lights –12000 pound winch with cable –Lightforce 240 XGT spotlights –GME heavy duty antenna –Uniden 80 channel UHF -TJM Snorkel –Brush bars and ADR approved rocksliders, Kaymar rear bar with dual wheel carrier and towbar, 4mm Heavy duty bash plates, Tough Dog 50mm lift with adjustable shocks, Diff and transfer case breathers, CTEK DC/DC Dual battery management system, Dealer Supplied Electronic and spray rustproofing, Series of 3 auxillary AGM batteries 125ah each (2 located behind rear seats), Diesel Smart secondary fuel filter & Custom Outback Touring Solution Drawers.
I had BFG 265/70 KO2's fitted this week and the Rhino Pioneer Platform goes on next week.

I am loving the information available on the forum which really assisted me to know what to look out for when purchasing a Prado and also what mods & maintenance I can do over the coming year.

My Dad and I are planning on taking the Prado across the Simpson in 2017 so will be keen to gain as much experience offroading between now and then.

I look forward to meeting some of the members in SE QLD over the next couple of months.
