Well yeah, but you would loose more than some rear shocks if you took your new Prado out of the show room straight onto the CSR.

Give credit where credit is due. The G-wagon is a better off roader than your new Prado and its spare put together.

      Front tyres 265/60 R18
      Rear tyres 265/60 R18

Those tyre sizes tell a bit of the story as to why the shocks failed, even if they were smart enough to run low pressures, a low profile tyre won't soak up the bumps as well as a higher profile tyre.

Now I should say that I know nothing about the off road ability of the Merc, but i would back a standard Prado to do the canning and make it in one piece. I know people that have done it in a standard Hilux and another in a standard Triton and survived without a single issue, the Prado is at least as good as those to IMO.

My boss has an ML500 mercedes (pretend 4WD) and that thing is a piece of shit, and was over 120k when new I believe.

      Cheers Andrew

60 is hardly low profile. It's the same tyre as the kakadu has.

        Agreed, ML class is shit.

Um, no. 60 IS low profile. 40/35/30 are ultra low profile.

Agree that the G-Wagens should have had spare shocks, maybe they did, and they have been blown too? Rather than bring in replacement factory items they should have got some billies under there...

The tyres should have been 70 profile.
Perhaps the FJ should have been the support vehicle.

this would be REALLY FUNNY if the australian army hadn't just ordered a shipload of them. the article im reading from is an excerpt from my local rag but it says for the full report go to www.drive.com.au . oh and theyre really cheap too at $161,680 or $40,000 more for the diesel . there is a reason they call it toyota country .

Actually, if you read the article, the only one that didn't kill its shockers was the military spec one, so the Army should be ok.

Well if Merc's interpretation of a mil-spec vehicle is a properly modified suspension:
It will be met by the only vehicle in the expedition to not suffer a failure - a military-specification G-Wagen station wagon with a modified suspension similar to the 1800 vehicles currently being delivered to the Australian Defence Force.
then many modded PP Prados in the rig build up section would be considered mil-spec.

Good to see that they come with a really universally available tyre size: 265/60R18. I wonder how many of those are stocked at the Wiluna repair shop. Oh, that's right, Wiluna doesn't have a repair shop. You'll have to talk to the guy at Leonora and see if the dudes in Kalgoorlie can organize for some new tyres to be shipped up from Perth (ex Sydney).
