  • Merecedes-Benz g-wagen

Looks like Merc has a bit of a problem making their fancy cars work in the desert. A very funny story about all their failures from the newspaper recently:

    "Outback cripples Mercedes-Benz's Toughest Off-Roaders":

If only they had taken Prados instead!

God I love this quote from the Merc bosses.

"Mercedes-Benz Australia spokesman David McCarthy says the broken shock absorbers - and three snapped spare wheel mounts - were expected."

      Says alot for the product.

I'm sure that Benz models are a bit elegant that is why I think benz parts is not made to run smoothly in the desert. Maybe a Rover is better in the desert.

The G Wagons actually performed pretty well for a vehicle straight off the showroom floor. Vehicles doing the same run, no matter what the make, would almost all be modified. These were stock and didn't have a rattle in them when they pulled into Broome! I think most would would think they are a pretty capable vehicle on closer inspection.

              Thommo4007,

Mate - they were brand new, Surely a few thousand K's shouldn't be enough t break them, unless they were driving at 100 mile an hour. I took a brand new unmodified Prado to the Cape and back 8,000 km. The Cape is renowned for corrugations. I still have no rattles 70,000 km later. The shocks are intact, it still has springs. The car was faultless for the whole trip. I'd take a Prado over the G-wagon any time.

Corigator, I think the main difference here is you own the Prado and probably didn't flog the crap out of it like a journo would! I too would take my Prado over the G but I think the report was harsh and didn't give a balanced view. I think an "owner" would have made the trip without as much carnage....

They're a very different vehicle. They actually took a military one with them; no failures on it, like you'd expect.

I have owned a G-Wagon, and they are incredibly capable not to be under estimated. i am sure if you put the same driver in a prado they would have broke it too. Some people have no vehicle sympathy.
