I'm just about to leave on a trip out to Alice Springs via the Flinders, Uluru, West McDonnels and this morning picked up the Sydney Morning Herald to read in the Letters to the Editor column about a rat plague around Boulia in outback Queensland. The writer claimed that rats were eating out the electrics on cars overnight and was advised to camp well out of town. While I won't be within a bulls roar of that area, I was wondering whether I might encounter rats in other places. I have heard about a lot of bush mice out west as a result of the rain, but the report of the rat plague caused me to sit up and take notice. Has anyone heard any first hand reports about this?

Welcome to the Flinders. Some heavy activity far north of Radelaide. I believe its the little fellas as opposed to their larger cousins. They won't eat muchBitumen: A blatant waste of taxpayers money!

Recently found the beginnings of a nest in the engine bay of my Prado.
Even more interesting though is that I found a hole chewed in the aircon filter behind the glovebox!! Explains the smell of mouse piss I had for a little while.2013 Land Rover Discovery 4 SDV6 SE

I was at Platypus Creek Camping Ground just out of Cairns,at Lake Tinaroo around 10 Days ago on way up to Cape, and ranger there told us to be aware of white tailed rats in the camping area that have eaten into the electric wiring of cars and any food they think is available. He also said they have eaten through eskys and tin cans. Did not spot any but makes you think twice about leaving things around in areas like that. Wife was also glad to be sleeping in rooftop tent that night.2010 Kakudu D4D,Crystal Pearl,TJM Alloy Bar,Snorkel,Brown Davis Underbody Guards,Icom UHF,Redarc with Dual Battery,Tigerz 11 12000lb winch,Custom Rear Storage,Rhino Alloy Platform Rack,50lt Boab H2oTank.Side Awning,Rooftop Tent.

There are field mice every where.
The rats are genereally around towns and popular feeding (camping) areas.
Due to the numbers there is not much you can do to stop them. We have had some luck leaving the bonnet open at night and lighting it up with one of those Solar LED spot lights. If the engine bay has a strong oil smell it also appears to keep more of them out.
What ever you do, don't fish oil your 4by just before you come out here.
We have been doing a lot of backburning and the little buggers keep running over our control lines on fire !!!!"Ooops I just deleted the internet, lucky I was able to recover 99.7% of it out of the bin"

Had mice all over my tent [and me while sitting by the fire trying to eat and cook] at the Lambert Centre, heard them on the tent in William Creek and had a bloody rat IN the tent and on me in Boulia-bugger chewed through clothing bags, "wet ones" and the flyscreen. They are everywhere outback at the moment. The thing that worries me is that a snake plague often follows the rat and mouse plague. Neil
