  • Android Tablet for Mapping

I am looking at using an Iconia A500 tablet to use with OziExplorer s/w for mapping. Don't really want to pull out the info unit in my (yet to be got) GXL. Mind you some of the units available would be cheaper.

Has anyone had any experience with these, or other "Android" based devises, I am interested in the A500 as it has an SD port and I hope I can use it as my map data base with OziExporer loaded in the unit.

I'm using a Asus TF1 Pad which has a micro sd slot. Great tablet and the GPS works well with Google maps and works ok using androzic. I've only installed the oziexplorer trial which is very limited so can't really comment.

Thanks Krypto, looks like a good option and the price is also good. With the keyboard option it becomes quite versatile.
Have you loaded your maps onto the tablet or use the micro sd. Just out of curiosity what size micro sd do you have?

I've got the Toshiba AT100 with OziExplorer loaded onto it.. Can't comment as yet as I haven't had the chance to use it on the road. But as far as everything else goes, the tablet works sensationally!! Superfast!

Have purchased a mount for it aswell. I'll have to get some pics up for you.

Thanks Mitch, saw your tablet and mounting thing on the GPS page, guess I should have been under that heading also. The Toshiba looks like a good unit so it adds to the overall selection process. I really liked your Mount unit, does is stick on the windscreen? It is something like I was looking at getting, the overlay on the picture is "SOONHUA" are they the suppliers?

Anyway, look forward to seeing the unit mounted in MUMSRIG

            regards

I bought a 32Gb micro SD which gives 64GB, you can also add another SD or even USB HDD to the Keyboard.

Also the screen on the ASUS is awsome, reviews rate it at least as good if not better than the ipad 2, easy to use in full. Very happy with it.

Hey Geoff. The mount rocked up and would be perfect if it would stay suctioned to the windscreen

They are sending me a replacement, hopefully this one will be OK. Otherwise I will have two to make one out of...

Whatever you do, don't buy the HP Tablet that was just released!!

I'm running OziExplorer for Android on a Motorola Xoom which works flawlessly. I am also using a windscreen mount for the XOOM made by Ram Mounts: http://www.ram-mount.com/NewProducts...1/Default.aspx.

Real happy with the XOOM as it gets used heaps at home and is the ideal travel companion for navigation, web surfing, emailing, and entertainment. I've also purchased a bluetooth OBD adapter which allows me to run a vehicle diagnostics tool called Torque: http://torque-bhp.com/. Scanguage eat your heart out!!!

On my last trip I ran OziExplorer, Google Navigator and Torque at the same time with no problems at all. Must admit these Android tablets eliminate the need for car pcs and are a great way of consolidating numerous devices into one.

Hi guys, thanks for all the info, I am presently leaning towards the Asus TF101. Fungi2003, I really like the obd adaptor that is definately on the to be got list. Mind you I am in the same boat as a lot of other PPers and still waiting so see my new car.

Good choice - I was close to getting the TF101 but bought the XOOM as it works on the NextG network. BTW, Ram make a mount for the TF101: http://www.ram-mount.com/CatalogResu...4/Default.aspx

I was also going to get a tablet with 3G capability but realised that it was much cheaper and simpler tethering the Tablet to my phone which is already on a 2Gb data pack at $20/month with Telstra

Excellent, thanks for the ram mount link Fungi2003, you are making it too easy for me :-)
Decided I don't need the next G capability as my phone does all my connectivity (emails etc) when I am away and I can bluetooth or wifi it to the tablet.

                          regards

                            G'day again Krypto,
It has been a while but am about to spend the folding stuff. Was about to get the Iconia A500 as it has better (imo) access wrt sd ports and usb access, however I m seeing comments about the GPS being very ordinary generally requiring an external GPS. You mentioned your Asus tf101 gps works well, how does it go with tree cover and cloud cover. If the GPS response is up to scratch without an external unit then the decision is made.

                            thanks
                            Geoff
