To answer your question ... yes, and as others have done, I replaced the gearbox grease and "resealed the seals" on both ends. I also painted all the electical connections with an insulation paint. I understand your financial predicament and agree with your logic. Any working winch is better than no winch at all if and it saves you once, it was worth the money.
The only thing I suggest is to do as I have, and relocate the solenoids to under the bonnet. I think by doing this you will possibly prolong their life. I rewired the 3way selection switch ( wireless/off/hand control ) to inside the cab and relocated the hand control socket to the bullbar. This works for me.
