if you have a winch and things get really desperate on the salt flats or beach you can always attach tow rope extension to the spare tyre, dig a deepish hole, place tyre in hole & fill then winch out to freedom... then when you get asked 'where did you learn that from' you reply 'remember all those hours I spent on Pradopoint'...

        Hi Folks

I won't have to concern myself about the issues and what if's as I'm working on winning the TJM OX winch at the 2011 GTG

See ya on the tracks, Richo (winch included).

Ummmm, silly question, but does the winch look upside down, spooling off the top and gearbox on drivers side ?????

can you educate me on that? -
the winch goes in and out as per the remote - does it matter if it is spooling of the top or bottom?
the gear box is full of grease so does it matter which side that it is on
i mounted the winch so the sticker is not upside down and the cables where as close to the main battery

              ??????

Well I had the winch for around 2 yrs. I almost needed it to get up the hill at Baal bone Gap on the Newnes side, but a bit of right foot solved the problem.

A month later I needed to remove a stump, so I thought why not use the winch. I got it all connected and lined up and with much anticipation pressed the in button - click .....

nothing happened. Very disappointed I slowly reversed the car on a short lead and out came the stump.

So I removed the winch and wired it up directly to the battery - nothing. So it was the winch not the solenoid that was the issue. I opened the motor and rust everywhere. -

The motor was ceased. I couldn't budge it - even after a good spray with WD40. I consulted with some friends and decided it was good for recycling.

                Number of tows - 0
Probably a waste of money. Very glad I didn't need it on the hill or anywhere else. It could have been very embarrassing.

Cause - probably leakage from a few river crossings around Lidsdale. I had repacked the gears and resealed the gearbox to stop leaks. I never thought to seal the motor, although I think the water came in from the roller side of the motor.

Lesson learn't - don't bother with the Aldi winches.

                I'm now a proud owner of a Tigerz11 Domin8R, but that's another story.

Have the Aldi winch going on two years. Used once dragging a Diso4 up the side of a steep mountain bogged to the axles with a broken CV. Dragged it 60 or more meters. Occasional give it a run and re spool and hasn't given me a problem so far.

Was told they are made in the same factory as TJM's. Who knows but so far so good, time will tell.

                    Hi

Just had my Avenger Mako serviced as it was intermittant, I suppose doing the Telegraph Track on the Cape didn't help The service company owner did suggest that after any day out when going through water/mud that you give it a bit of a flush and then run the winch to dry the motor area out. He also suggested that a run once a month will keep it running great.

                    Richo.

Wash it off with a good spray of clean water. Drying out is the important bit. Water crossings pour volumes of water at winches and it gets forced in, but then has to drain out under gravity which they mostly don't and the only drain to the lowest non sealed point.

Pull the rope or cable out and splash some water around to clean the winch, then run it. Pull the handbrake on a touch if you don't have an incline to put some load on and get the rewind spooled with tension.

                          Richo.

OK thanks Richo that makes sense. I have only just recently got my Tigerz11 one running but it's been on the bar a while and has been through mud. It got a wash off after the last outing but I didn't unspool the rope. Since it still needs to be spooled on under tension it's a good excuse to do the extra step.

Also running the winch under a bit of load actually dries the inside out, that is the reason for the running.

                              Richo.
